    lolwut?

The US did not lose in Vietnam. We signed a treaty in which all of our demands were met and the enemy agreed to stop fighting. We left the country and the NVA immediately invaded the South. We cannot be held responsible for their treachery, as we had already legally exited the war.

As well, just practically speaking, the US never lost a battle to the NVA, had unbelievably high average K/DR, and never once was invaded by the NVA. We cannot be considered losers in any reasonable or technical sense.

Things are often not black and white, we're talking about history here not Michael Jackson.

Communism wasn't even around when the Monroe Doctrine was made. The Monroe Doctrine, in a nutshell, was Europeans stop trying to colonize the Americas and the US will not interfere in Europe. You might be thinking of the Truman Doctrine, but still...

That was the Truman doctrine, the Monroe Doctrine was made over a hundred years previous. Even if you said Roosevelt Corollary you'd be farrrrrr off.

The Truman doctrine also never stated governments needed to be democratic just anti-communist but that's another post for another topic.

We did win the Korean War. Grant it, it wasn't a glorious victory like it would've been had we grinded our way up the Korean Peninsula again, but South Korea survived against the Communists to spite not holding any of the chips.

I often wonder what would have happen if MacArthur had been allowed to attack china in the Korean war (which had already had alot of Chinese soldiers involved) would it have gone to ww3 and would the soviets come in.

Also Vietnam we did win if you look at it in terms of protecting the south until the peace treaty was signed then it wasn't are situation anymore, but if you look at it from stopping the spread of communism. Then well we fail.

I really doubt that you could find yourself a general or military historian other than crazy-man MacArthur that would tell you that that would have been a good idea to even attempt such a thing.
As for glorious... I don't think that the U.S. public would see losing hundreds of thousands more troops as 'glorious', no matter how many Chinese and North Koreans you killed. And the causulties to take back the northern half of the penninsula would be that high, if not higher.

Yeah I completely agree. Once China started overflowing with soldiers it was time to bug out.

That is why China got fully involved in Korea.

Casualties wouldn't be hundreds of thousands. There wasn't enough soldiers, on either side. And China wasn't about to commit that much to stopping us. They simply wanted to stop us from "gaining a bigger foothold" in Asia.

It was easily feasible. And what exactly do you have against MacArthur? He blundered in Korea right after fighting an impressive campaign through it. What's the problem here?

Maybe so, maybe not. We may never know how much China would have comitted to pushing back the U.S. after the U.S. invaded North Korea [which, yes, I know that North Korea started all this by invading the South]. The point was less the numbers loss than that they would easily be great enough to push the U.S. public into pressuring the U.S. government into halting the war.

From what I heard [though my U.S. History isn't perfect], the U.S. President at the time [Truemen?] told MacAuthur to stop at the river seperating North Korea from China [the Yalu], because he [the President] didn't want to pick a fight with China. Granted, I don't think that MacAuthur ever actually crossed the river, but the President had set a boundry a bit away from it and said to MacAuthur "When you get here, stop." and MacAuthur didn't. Democratic Korea or Communist, it doesn't make that much difference to me, but when you start messing with China, THEN I have a problem. After that incident, the Chinese started pushing back the U.S.

Before this, I respected [and to a certain extent still respect] MacAuthur, due to his actions in the Phillipines and the Pacific Theater of World War Two. But I cannot abide by his uncalled-for aggression in the Korean conflict.

He was a lunatic who wanted to silence free speech and persecute anyone who didn't think all commies should die.
