Look at the Coffeehouse. It kind of proves the opposite.

Thats not really a structured debate, you just react to some person who then reacts to you and so on. You dont need to structure your reasoning in different phases which all have clearly defined limits...etc.

    That's my point.

People don't react to each other in the Coffeehouse forums, they simply blog about their opinions. Occasionally there will be some conflicting opinions and people start quoting each other, but no one ever debates in the same framework (damn commies in particular) and so nothing is ever definitively proven.

    Right, misunderstood you there.

Well not in my experience, once a discussion is started often people keep on discussing and reacting directly to what the other person says. The main problem with the coffee house for pure discussion is that it tends to devolve into a massive clusterfuck of people joining in on the discussion and discussing with other people.

A structured debate then often does not result in people actually directly discussing with one another but instead you get two parties just having a monologue and not correctly reacting to eachother. Which is strengthened through time lapses between arguments where people first have to say their main argument before they can react to the other persons argument, and the post limit and general structure through which it is often hardly possible to point out interpretational mistakes and uncomplete reactions because you already need to start doing your next argument.
