I find it interesting that on multiple times De Gaulle pleaded with the French generals to allow him to use his tanks the way he wanted, which seems like if they had let him, history would have played out differently.

Had the French forces had been redeployed differently they could have stopped the German invasion.

As long as morale was kept high. As soon as morale in the French army went down, it shattered...

They had tons of chances to salvage the situation after the Germans broke through. However the generals they appointed after the initial invasion were extremely incompetent.

Read "Hitler's war" by Harry Turtledove. It is a very interesting read on alternate history.

Was useful during the period, but got out dated as technology advanced...

Line formations in the US civil war caused it to be the bloodiest war in American history...

I'm against it, but it wasn't a failure, it provided free labor and made a hell of a lot of money.

I agree with Mosh. It was not a failure. It was used since the ancient Syrians. Id say thats an accomplishment for it to last like 3-4,ooo years...

Not an accomplishment, but a monument to human oppression and the sad fact of inequality in society.

The reason I call it a failure is because it caused the destruction of the Western Roman Empire. Slavery has seperated groups from one another. It has caused the destruction of many empires. Not sure though. It was inhumane and it was due to what social class you were in or your skin color.

One failure would be of Napoleon entering into Russia and failing to get out in time.

After he took what remained of Moscow, he had a window of opportunity(first week of October I think) when he could have started the withdrawal of his Grand Army. Had he started it earlier, a larger portion would have made it out alive. Instead he does it later which, among other problems, caused him to loose a large portion of the army.

Last time I checked, slavery had nothing to do with the destruction of the Western Roman Empire.
