They shouldn't cut funding to it just because Palestine joined it.

Its a symbol of power and control that the US feels the need to use against the UN. Heck, but who wants the Hamas to control a nation.

65% of all UN Members recognize The Palestinian State, I see no reason why we shouldn't.

Problem here is that statehood requires two elements: foreign recognition AND governance of a defined territory. Guess which one is relevant here.

You're right, basically Israel is in control of their Statehood.

Canada also cut it's funding. Shameful, its the equivalent of taking your ball and going home because you didn't get your way. Only on an international level.

I think of it this way. The US is the bully, picking on everyone individually except for Canada and the UK who stand by its side and call the bullied names. This time however, everyone collectively told them to kindly fuck right off. The bully thinks 'WTF? This isn't fair, you can't all gang up on me!' and runs away. Only with part of UNESCO's funding.

I think it's deplorable. I mean it's UNESCO for peete's sake. Make some sort of tangible security statement, don't cut funding to education.

@Kali - The PLO is a perfectly capable and autonomous state

As I said, they aren't sovereign over the borders they claim.

Or to put it another way, they aren't sovereign over their UN mandated borders because Israel is occupying it.

Point is that they can't enforce their tyrannical, brutal laws in the areas they say they can. It'd be like if Alaska suddenly claimed autonomous control of Canada.

Look at the borders claimed by Palestine. Look at the borders that are claimed by Israel. Guess who's not in charge when they overlap?

They still govern and operate their own lands. Autonomy isn't a solely Westphalian endeavor. (soundbytes with little meaning ftw)
