Well they did partially colonize the Crimea. They could have entered Russia through that way.

Hmm yea I forgot about that, I suppose they could have done that, but i don't think they would have tried to enter into russia if they did not first suceed in germany. After varus failed in germany, Rome ceased any serious attempts to push further into eastern europe( except for dacia), so I can't see Rome trying to push into russia if they did not first secure germany.

I wonder if Rome could have advance farther into the East from Persia, and maybe even gotten to India?

Trajan was pretty much the only emperor to succeed in actually invading and beating the persian empire, taking large amounts of lands from them, unfortunatly after trajans death, hadrian immediatly gave these new lands back to the persians because he felt that they were unholdible. If the romans held these territories they may have been able to advance further east, although getting all the way to india is a bit of a stretch.

No. The Romans were unable to change their fighting styles to fight in the Middle East because everything was so standardized. Not to mention the Persians were incredible fighters.

Yeah that is what I thought. Maybe if they got a good general that was able to create some sort of ancient guerrilla light infantry force.

So they could have advanced further East, it just would have been extremely difficult and they probably wouldn't have made it all the way to India.

Well Crassus's goal I believe was to reach India. Now I wonder if you put a more competent commander like Caesar instead of Crassus leading that attack, do you think it would have succeeded?

I don't think so, because its just such a big swathe of land. Maybe halfway into Persia, but that's about it.

Barbarian in roman times was a different concept than we have today, for them it simply meant that they were uncivilised or didn't have greco-roman culture!

I think he met that the "other barbarians" (not Romans) were uncivilized and didn't wash/shave.
