Are they contrary to the free market, or a necessary form of property rights?

I currently do not have an opinion, but the thought has occurred to me.

I only like them when Apple has to pay royalties.

Come to think of it, this thread could be about Intellectual Property rights in general.

They're certainly a lot more moderate and humane than copyright.

How so? They're pretty much the same thing just for different forms of intellectual property

    *giggles* property "rights" *giggles*

Patents are a means of protecting the interests of the employing/capitalist class, as well as protecting sub-divisions within the capitalist class.

Yep, all media should be free and open source anyway.

What about video games? Or do you think that's a capitalist pass time?

Straw-man, I never said its capitalist to play video games. I merely said they should be freely distributed.

Just checking, man. You know I'm joking. But really, are you sure people are going motivated enough to make games, once we convert to Anarchism? Just curious.

Why on earth would someone spend the millions of dollars to develop product or a media product, if they can't gain any monetary reward for it. You're basically asking people to sacrifice themselves for your idea of justice because without being able to sell their product they would have spent years working on something without any means of even supporting themselves

Even given that, what's the impetus to innovate if you're going to be compensated the same regardless of your output?

Well they both are subject to myriad abuses, but patents last 20 years. Copyright lasts 70 years after the death of the author or, in the case of works created for a corporation, 120 years after creation, thanks to brutal lobbying from Disney. That's an absurd length of time that does nothing to serve the public interest and everything to serve the rentier class. A 20-year patent is reasonable, even maybe slightly too long - it works well enough to allow pharmaceutical companies to be some of the richest in the world and make billions in annual profit. Copyright is just grotesque.

    Yes.

In most forms of socialism(all forms of anarchism included), work becomes more of a socialization activity, a hobby, and a means to gain kudos in a community. Rather then a method of increasing your wealth.

You wouldn't, would you? You are willingly ignorant to human nature because it doesn't line up with your societal beliefs that make you feel oh-so-superior. Jerk.
