And Brazil is not written with a "Z" as much as the Azores aren't, but it's in english.

And do we read it as Mehico? no, then why should we read Ivory Coast as Cote D'Ivoire?

There isn't a particular logic to cartographic naming. Inaccuracy exists, but it's usually because of an anachronism in some distant lingua franca's past. That these things are cobbled together over the history of human civilization doesn't help with the consistency.

Not only does Cote d'Ivoire confuse people with its name, but their flag also throws a lot of people off. I was in an Irish bar last night, and during the pub quiz, people had to guess which was the correct flag. You wouldn't believe how many people got it wrong.

And no, that's not the Irish flag.

That is the official name of the country, and it is wrong to translate it into English. So we shouldn't put it on the map as "Ivory Coast". Thats like the French putting the US on the map as EU.

We put it on the map as VS (Verenigde Staten). It's not weird to translate stuff. You don't put Russia on the map as Rossija, or the Netherlands as Nederland, do you?

They probably had a bunch of Irish flags laying around and just decided to flip them around.

Now, now, they're already getting the name wrong in their own language, let's not go too fast here.

And it's quite strange indeed...but now I'd love to have a big map of the world with all countries having their names in their own languages (with the English names below them, or at least the name in Latin text).

Well, that makes sense, seeing as that's the official name in its own language.

That's bullshit, FIFA and IOC do not use Cote D'Ivoire, I've seen it spelt in English during a football match.

Then that's probably the fault of whoever records it, not the FIFA or IOC. You could try to find a matchmaking video where they're in, that's what FIFA does make.
