No, I mean the States had a lot of power, but even then it was very little. And on some frontier territories what the state thought was just a formality.

I wouldn't pin the Civil War on State's Rights.

To everyone: I'll respond to individual questions and whatnot in due time. I'm not meaning to ignore anyone, I've just been a very busy guy! I really don't mind taking time to sit down and clarify things when I can.

The conclusion of the poll was 'drysift should respond first', which is what I expected folks to pick. I can't show up anyways, my tea party group is meeting to figure out the best ways to go about helping out with some charity events for the troops this holiday season. I still encouraged a few friends to go, one of which I really hope gives drysift a good trolling. Lord knows they were asking for it by being a complete debate-jerk.

I'm in the midst of making several visits down to Civic Center Plaza, Occupy San Diego's chosen hub, and I'm compiling a report on where things stand presently. I've already informally interviewed with a few cops, glanced around, scouted things out for pictures. I'll only share this at the moment - the bunch that IS there is small, angry, but they don't really do anything besides flip the bird at me and other passerby for the crime of walking by them and scrawl defiant messages on the sidewalk in colored chalk. It -seems- like I won't have to be as delicate as I originally thought. They're still forcing a 24/7 extra police force of at least eight cops to keep an eye on them.

If any of you have specific things you want me to inquire about, take photos of, or investigate while I'm down there now's the time to ask.

lol. With the articles of confederation the national government couldn't even collect taxes. The states had ALL the power under the Articles of Confederation. They were a disaster. And the Civil War was caused precisely by states rights. Slavery was considered by the South to be a STATE RIGHT, and it was only the biggest of the many state's rights that were being disputed that lead to the Civil War.
