Movie: LOTR, Munich. Flash Gordon, Quadrophenia Games: Morrowind, Vice City, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound
I can't believe I keep forgetting about this. I can still remember the missions, the entire maps and the setting just from listening to the soundtrack. Call of Duty just had to ruin FPS games forever.
I'm generally in love with paradox games, it is truly epic. The feeling you get when you hear para bellum when you attack an enemy is in my opinion truly epic! (east vs west is also a favorite)
Hans Zimmer is often overrated. Sure, he does a lot of truly amazing stuff (my personal favorites are the Gladiator and Dark Knight soundtracks), but some of it is a clear step down. MW2's soundtrack was good, but rather uninspired, unremarkable, and generic. Brian Tyler took those words even further with MW3. Completely unoriginal, and many parts were just a bad mashup of unrelated, copied motifs that made no sense together. Just following on from the rest of the game, I guess. There are too many great soundtracks for me to name off the top of my head, but just from last year, the ones that stood out for me where Deus Ex, Xenoblade and Skyrim. Please note that in many cases, you can't fully appreciate or understand both the music or why I like them so much until you play the respective games, and hear them in context. Also, there were plenty of other games last year that had great soundtracks, much more than any other year, so don't hate if I missed something. Please listen with good quality audio output and in a quiet environment. Don't bother if you're impatient or don't have much time, just come back to this. Deus Ex: Human Revolution Wow. Where can I start. Dark, synthy, rhythmic and brooding. Extremely evocative. Also the game soundtrack that made me want to go back and play the game the most. Xenoblade Chronicles Stunningly beautiful compositions. Not much more to say, really. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim This is coming from a guy who thought that the main themes of Morrowind and Oblivion were fantastic, but not most of the other music. One great piece does not a great soundtrack make. They were good, of course, but not great, so unlike most people, Skyrim was not an automatic inclusion on my list. However, this time around Jeremy Soule manages to create a soundtrack fully worthy of the game it scores. Everyone talks up this track, and for good reason. A booming, guttural piece carried by the large, manly choir. Just listening to this make you want to shout along and tear your dog's head off. However, I don't think it's the most reflective of the game, and therefore not the best piece of the soundtrack. That honor goes to this. THIS theme, more than any of the other tracks in this game's soundtrack or for that matter any other game of last year, takes me back to my memories of experiences in the game's fantastic world. Put that music over THIS video, muted and in as large and high resolution as your computer will allow. Actually the original music fits better (and is also from the game) but do it anyway.
I could post half of the Skate and THPS soundtracks. The guys who made those games knew some awesome songs. Also Kick-Ass had an excellent soundtrack
