Yesterday I downloaded Medieval 2 Total War Complete from Steam for £5. It took 5 hours to download and because the Manchester server seemed to have slowed down I switched servers around a bit, coming back to Manchester because I found out that they are all shite. Anway, I paused the update download at about midnight and resumed it this afternoon at about one. It finishes downloading and I click play from the Steam menu. It says that Direct X has not installed properly, or some bullshit like that, though it doesn't matter because in theory I already have it. So, first few times I run the game to check out all the different campaigns it works fine. Then it begins to go to shit. When I launch the game the Launcher music continues playing so I quit instantly, when I try to reload I get the message saying "Game is unavailable. Please try again at another time." I restart the computer and I get the same problem with music playing, quit and the the error message again. In the Medieval 2 Total War folder there are a shit load of .dll files and two files called installscript.vdf and instscript.vdf. To me it seems that these files, .dll and .vdf, have installed in the wrong place since I can't seem to remember them being there in the disk version.

Any help, as ever, is much appreciated. Thanks.

Edits: Also, the music continues playing after I close the game. And in the launch menu there is a huge white box which I think means that it isn't connecting to the Sega servers for some reason.

I don't know much about steam, but it seems the install wasn't clean.

Did you try looking for similar problems on the web?

i recommend you run a defrag of the game files and if necessary delete the local content and re-download.

Perhaps I should mention that the playing of the game actually works.

well if you can play the game without a problem this situation is already under control. don't worry, after a while the game will sort itself out and get it fixed.

P.S this most likely happened due to swapping the servers while downloading

I have the exact same problem, plus it crashes on startup unless I click on the game window when it loads.
