One thing that ticks me off about Facebook nowadays is that it there is virtually no privacy. If you post something and your friend comments on it, then his/her friend that you don't know can see it and if he/she comments on it their friends can see it etc. Also, you have the ability to post where you are posting from. So how much tranparency is too much? I am to the point where whenever I go on Facebook I do not even bother to post anything or make any comments, and instead just chat with my friends where nobody else can see anything, if I go on Facebook at all which is rare ow. So how much transparency it too much? I did not know if I should post this in the current events or in the general philosophy section so forgive me if this is in the wrong section of the forums.

It is too transparent, but that's not my only problem with it. It also saves all your surfing behavior and sells that to third-party companies, and by starting an account on Facebook you basically agree and give them permission to do that.

As soon as you go on the internet, you throw away your privacy. I've been at a very interesting lecture about this, titled: "You have zero privacy anyway, get over it", which happens to be a statement I fully agree with. Not to mention people are being hypocrites about it anyway. There are people who fill in "witty" birth years and stupid last names like "lolnotgunnatellyou:p", yet they tell how their grandparents died. Seriously, what the fuck? Companies save, use and buy all the information they can get from you. There are probably ways around this, but really, why bother?

I agree. If you want privacy, don't go posting stuff onto the interwebz. The clue is in the name.

As other people have stated if you want privacy, don't post stuff on the internet.

I'm pretty sure Google sells a lot of information as well. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if all companies with such information sold it.

Basically, yes. Google also gets money for getting people higher up the search results, and ads, of course.

If you want privacy, simply don't use Facebook, when you get in it you have already agreed on not having privacy, it's dumb but that's how it is.

Which is why I only go on Facebook like twice a month.

They do. As they have really little ads, that's the way they earn money. And I think they also save your browsing behavior to advertisement companies.

As a matter of fact, it is. Google can only rely on ads which they don't use very often because that would only become annoying. I don't judge Google for it, in fact, I prefer that over most forms of advertisements.

But that will still give Facebook massive amounts of information because of the cookies they use. The only way to get around that, is de-registering on Facebook and emptying all the cookies on your computer.

Or not allowing your browser to save cookies, or use a different browser just for facebook. Still, does it really matter? Who cares that the guys at facebook can see what sites you've visited?

Just like banks will not be looking at your friends credit scores to determine if you are good for a loan or whatnot, and if you are a profitable customer look at your friends and send marketing their way.

I don't really care, but Sly said that was the reason he only entered twice a month. But what I really hate about Facebook is that they automatically invite your e-mail contacts. If I'd want to invite them, I'd invite them.

Wait, that's automatic? I received a few emails about joining Facebook from people, but I assumed they'd just invited everyone in their list themselves, I never knew that was automatic. That is pretty rude indeed.

Well I still keep my facebook because it can be useful when need arises, and once in a while I want to chat with friends I dont see anymore.
