Most of those are weak as hell. Anyway back on topic, football dominates soccer.

When all protection you have is a bit of stuff that protects your teeth, then I'd be a lot more careful as well. With American football, where you wear three times the armour Medieval knights did, you can do whatever you feel like and come out unscathed. It kinda seems like driving an F1 car into a wall to me.

Also, don't American football matches take like hours because of the pre-game...activities like cheerleaders and marching bands? That's what I remember from Stephen Fry's US series.

As for the name (the actual topic), American football indeed makes no sense whatsoever.

American football is dominant in only one country. Football/Soccer/Fussball is immensely popular in several countries across the globe. That is all.

Several countries? I'd say two, maybe even three continents.

I'd say four. Football's really kicking off in Asia, if you'll pardon the pun.

While it's getting bigger, I don't think it's the dominating sport there.

It already is in a number of Asian countries, including Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand, all of which have high populations.

Hmm, I never thought it was that popular already...but with football in South Korea, you do mean real football and not FIFA tournaments, right?

Sure do. Oh and I must amend an earlier error. American football is also the number one sport in American Samoa, so that's two countries.

Speaking of American Samoa, they apparently recently won their first football game ever. They beat...some other island 2 - 1. I saw the replay, and it was fucking awful. Also, their coach was Dutch.

These things. I've no idea if there's a word for it in German. You guys probably have the sense to simply call it 'table football'.

Makes more sense than us using the German for football.
I'm amazed no-one was offended by my comparison of American Football to Rugby?
Edit: okay, Spartan_King wasn't too keen. But the rules seem similar to me.

Rugby and American Football look similar but really aren't all that similar.

well for one more people like footbal over american footbal so mass vote wins and its called that.

american football started out as a mix of rugby and football, so football should never had its name changed.

and lastly americans are a pain in the ass cause they use the english language, but dont!!! so most times i lean against whatever the american says, because they cant make there bloody minds up.

nothing against americans, just my opinion.
