Let me pose to you a hypothetical: You are a traveler in space and you happen upon an unidentified ship. Out of curiosity, you board said ship. Within the ship you find little more than a pair of what appear to be cryogenics pods. Inscribed in a black, unidentified metal between the the pods is the following inscription [partly, roughly translated, after much work]: Here lie (names unreadable), who are the last of our dying race Upon them, we give a great blessing Knowledge and wisdom far beyond their age And upon them, we lay a duty To resore our forlorn race They are the bearer of our banner And Heralds of our Return Let me now pose to you a question: Do you open the hushed caskets and insodoing, possibly save a species, or do you destroy them? *Assume both that can do either and that you have to make a decision immediately.
Well you're perfectly safe in letting them go because two (or whatever constitutes 'little more than a pair') is not a sustainable population.
That is assuming how their population works. I said that there were the pods, not what the two looked like. Quite possibly you could be dealing with a hivemind-like species with one pod holding a queen and one a mate for the queen. Also, logic dictates that it can be assumed [though it is debatable] that the race from which they are from were aware enough of their own reproductive cycles to judge that two individuals were enough to carry on the species. Err... yay and nay. Remember that [I may be wrong as I don't read the bible often] they had two sons, only one of which survived to propogate and that he did so with others outside of his parents' families. In retrospect, it could be said that all he did was merge his bloodline with those of another group and that his family were not the only humans, nor did all humans actually come from them. If I recall correctly [again, not a bible-expert] when he was banished by G-d he said something like: 'If you banish me, the others will kill me.' The others being the important part of the statement, it implying that there were other humans. The whole point being that the idea is understood [what you said], but not necessarily the same.
I would open it, if they were going to conquer the galaxy I might be able to get some sort of reward for being their Tenzing Norgay.
