Pro-Gaddafi forces capture Bani-Waldi

So apparently, Pro-Gaddafi forces have risen up, and captured the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani-Waldi. It looks another Libyan Civil war is about to kick off.

I do remember Al Jazzera reporting on something like this a few days back. This is very interesting. It goes to show that not everyone supports the current transitional government, I think majority of the people don't favor it one bit.

I'm not particularly sure where this heading towards though. A civil war looks like a real possibility.

Libyans are protesting again because of the inefficiency of the transitional government. They certainly don't want another Ghadafi esque strongman. They just want what their leaders promised, and they want it quickly. There isn't going to be another civil war. Also, I haven't seen this on Al Jazeera yet, so I'm curious what's actually happening.

Here's the thing - New Libya isn't exactly a shining example of Democracy. I mean, let's look at some of the things they have done.
They instituted shariah law, legalized physical/sexual abuse against women, declared homosexuality illegal, banned alcohol, made it legal to question their regime, they made torture legal, they raised a flag of Al-Qaeda above their chief-ministrywhateveritscalled building, and invited leaders from countries accused of genocide by humanitarian groups into their country, calling them friends.

I can imagine that people aren't exactly happy with their new system.

A broken democracy is better than a dictatorship.

Dreadful things, but about on par with what you can expect out of a non-secular country. At this point, the will of the people rules, at least until the UN or some other organization straightens things out. It's certainly not a good situation, but it's better than what they had before.

We already established a long time ago that it wasn't the NTC flying the flag, but rather some half wit or prankster. The government wouldn't knowingly raise the flag of terrorist organization. They aren't that stupid.

Diplomatic pandering and maneuvering is hardly a heinous crime. They're just grappling for whatever help they can get, it's not like they're begging for closer ties with people like Lukashenko or Assad.

People reap what they sow. They wanted a non-secular government, they got one. Simple as that. Do I believe it will be a fully functioning democracy any time soon? Hardly. Do I think it's a step in the right direction. Certainly.

Don't feel like responding to matt's post just now. I thought I should correct a typo though - I meant 'They made torture legal' rather than illegal.

This doesn't seem like an equivalent, or anything near, to the civil war we've just seen. It may escalate to the point where U.N Peacekeepers, or what ever is there, need to be more active. If anything it may just be the reaction of a successful revolution and dissolution of the government, a counter-revolution, if you will, and a very small one at that from what we know.

The mostly economic part of Shariah which I have no idea how anyone can have a problem with. I see nothing about legalized physical/sexual abuse against women, it was illegal under Gaddafi so the laws haven't changed, if that's what people want so what, how is that bad, again nothing about it, why does everyone focus on that one event hasn't happened since and it never will again, I don't know exactly which ones but if they are next to Libya they are almost obligated to. What this does illustrate is we need to do more to get Libya organized and stable not just watch.

Give them time, it may be just as slow as Canadian Parliament, with three readings within an alotted time to pass a law. (not saying that the new Libyan 'Democracy' is similar at all to this, but would follow the same lenghty process)

Can't we just get rid of the senate get rid of one reading and vote.

I'm not sure of either two options, but I bet we could either, bring it up in the current process and pass reform legislation or bring it to Royal affairs. I don't work in that specific field, but it'd be much better and much more productive, in my oppinion.

Well only one thing to do at a time like this.

It's not good news when you've "won" a Civil War and then suddenly the other side captures a city that was a major battle in the war. It would be like if after the US Civil War a bunch of Confederate nationalists took Atlanta.
