The Submit Videos section is a wonderful place for upstart LP'ers and the like to put themselves out there, however the place is a mess. All I propose here is a rule in the section that says users are limited to a single thread where they post all of their content. This way it's easy to see what's going on their, as well it would be easier to find content from a particular user. For obvious logistical reasons, this rule wouldn't be retroactive.
Man you are just full of ideas lately. I like this and while I can't promise to implement this atm (I'm unwinding from school and this seems like busy work) I'm sure someone else will, and if not I'll take care of it before I head off to bed
I figured I'd step up and take initiative. Not to speak badly of the establishment, but it just feels like we're at about the same place as when I left.
I agree with this change. In addition I think the threads names should be formatted USER: GAME(, GAME) etc.
This is where I think we're pushing organization too far, the thread title, while being meaningful, should be left to the discretion of the creator of the thread.
In retrospect I agree, it was unnecessarily authoritarian. Maybe just a guideline in the inevitable sticky thread explaining one post per user etc.
As one of the Let's Players, I do NOT think this is a good idea as it is right now. While it will reduce clutter, it adds confusion by having so many videos essentially in just one post instead of separate threads. I like organization, and trying to keep all of the videos sorted will be a nightmare, let alone being someone interested in watching someone's videos and trying to sort through it all. If you do go this way, I would suggest allowing the LPers to multi-post in their own mega-thread to let people know when their new videos are up and any new LPs they are posting (since so few people reply in those threads anyway. Alternatively (or additionally), each person could have their threads in their own personal sub-forum for those who are the most active. All their current threads could be moved into their subforum without edits and new threads could still be created. People, of course, would have to apply for their own sub-forum and acceptance could be based on certain criteria. New folks could be limited to the one thread in the main submit-videos section as suggested until they have enough LPs under their belt that the first post is a bit too cluttered (probably around 3 or 4). Also note that users cannot modify their own thread titles after the thread is created at this point in time (or at least the last I checked), which is something that would be a necessity if the videos are limited to just one thread. Just my 2 cents.
Like I said to D3VIL, that would be over organization. I see no problem with members multi-posting in this particular situation, but individual members being given their own sub-forum is a bit much. When you have new videos, just add them to the latest post in your thread. As for titles, just make it something generic for your channel.
TBH I still won't like how very disorganized the individual threads will be as a whole. Really, "Submit Videos" isn't even supposed to be for LP's but for individual videos. The forum description: "If you have a video you would like to me to see, or the other users to see, post it here. I will take the best ones every so often and post it on the home page." Now, I'm pretty certain that I've posted more links to videos on this website than any other person, period. I plan to add many, many more, but the character limit for a single post will get met pretty darn quick when linking to hundreds of videos in the OP. Geeze, I can only imagine the chaos with people who are embedding the vids in their posts! IMHO, this will just shift the chaos from the forum to threads, so instead of it being hard to find a thread for videos to watch, it'll be hard just to sort through videos once you get to the thread! I believe that people going into those forums are looking for interesting videos to watch, not people to watch. As it is now, people can choose to look for the videos they want to watch. With this change, instead of being able to go straight to the vids they want, they'll have to sort through a bunch of individual threads they don't want to watch to get to the ones that they do. Honestly, I don't think it will be possible for me to stay and keep posting videos if you put this into effect, because I will not stand for the limitations and chaos that having it all in a single thread will cause. Edit: Using spoilers will only be temporary solutions to permanent problems, if they are being used to help keep the videos sorted.
It should be the responsibility of the individual user to organize their own thread, however they see best fit. Almost all videos posted in that section are of Let's Plays.
Well. Since I'm a bit peeved at the moment, I will give my frank opinion on the matter. I feel that as someone that makes these videos and decides to post them up somewhere, I should be able to do so. I feel that I have a right to post videos of a single game in it's own, unique thread, separate from other games I'm making videos of, regardless of the forum I'm posting it to. I feel that you are revoking my right to create threads because I want to share videos of too many games. I see nothing wrong with the forum as it is now besides clutter with non-LP threads. Please, at the very least separate out the non-LPs from the LPs and give them their own separate sections. I feel that this is a fair middle ground so long as LPers get to keep their ability to make a thread for a specific game their LPing. The threads are supposed to be about the game, not so much the person playing it. If this goes into effect as it is now, or in an unsatisfactory way, my business here is concluded. I will pull all of my videos from the site and not post another for as long as this rule is in effect. Heck, I know how many people actually follow the links to my videos, and quite frankly, it's abysmal. I can live without them if I have to, or find someplace better. I've posted my videos here simply because I want to and because I respect Stalin and what he's managed to do with his own LPing career, but if this rule get's in the way of that, I will not hesitate perform the aforementioned actions. I'll be posting 3 videos over the next two days before going on a video uploading hiatus until the 21st (this had been planned). I'll give this issue until then to get itself sorted out, and if this plan isn't modified, or goes into effect by then, au revoir! Now, off to bed for me. I'll check back in the morning.
I don't believe this change is necessary, the volume of submissions we get is very manageable for the time being. Videos within a series should be in a singular thread, but there's little need for a reorganization of the nature that you're proposing. It would limit visibility and achieve little while wasting mods' time.
I've stated my case for this reform and defended it to some extent. I'd like to see this either be enacted, or rejected. Either one is better than letting the thread die on the second page.
