Sounds like Lord of the Rings. For anyone who has ever read the first chapter of the first book, you can tell that a ton of stuff got edited out or moved in the movies. Some of the dialogue were even given to different characters for crying out loud! Still, it was a good movie series.
"A Song of Ice and Fire" is the name of the book series. The books have different titles, with the first being "A Game of Thrones". The TV series is called "Game of Thrones" without the "A", and following seasons will have the same title. Season 2 does indeed premiere April 1st in the US, later in other countries. Correct, they didn't actually remove everything, but quite a lot was. They chose excellently what should and shouldn't remain in the TV series, and replaced important omissions with different and better suited story elements.
I don't know if it'll be the best thing ever, by the way. It has a strong contestant in Sherlock, which I find to be the best detective there is right now. Such a shame there aren't too many episodes, but damn, it's amazing.
If they keep doing what they're doing and follow the books while perfectly adapting them, with such high quality and production values, then I have full confidence that after another season or two it will be greater than anything else on TV. That's not to say Sherlock isn't a contender though.

I'd say some of my favourite TV programmes are The New Statesman, A House of Cards, and Hill Street Blues. Oh, and a lot of the BBC sitcoms from the 80's/90's.
Certainly one of the all time greats. By some miracle the show didn't win a single major award throughout its history, and viewership and general recognition was a fraction of that of other HBO shows. It didn't have the appeal, but it was television at its very best. I listed it as one of my favourite shows in my original post but I couldn't put it at the very top for a number of reasons. I was a little young (early-mid teens), I had to watch it on a crappy standard def analogue TV with a weak signal, and I've lived in high quality of life and low crime areas all my life and thus couldn't relate as much to the themes. I still knew that it was something very special regardless. If I can save up I'll buy the box set and give it a proper go.
I have watched all five of the series on box set, and was probably at a similar age to yourself whilst I watched them aswell. It was only the first series that I struggled to relate to because that was themed around "the streets", whereas the rest focused on more relevant topics such as education, politics and media. My favourite series would be education I guess, because at the time I was watching it I was in high school and, obviously, I found it alot more easier to connect with the characters and to an extent their struggles because of where I was educated. I also enjoyed the view from the teachers perspective alot because my family is full of teachers, and most people think being a teacher is a piece of piss job with no pressure and long holidays.
