That's all you ever really need to use, claims and holy wars.

True, and you can even declare a Holy War on everyone, not just crusade targets or bordering countries.

Crusade targets just give your characters a nice crusader trait and lots of piety.

Sweet, being at war with the crusade target gives some awesome boni in EU3 as well, but I can't remember them.

Bigger troop reinforcement rate and bigger tax revenues I think.

But if you think of it, if you went to crusade against the infidels during that period, your life could actually turn better than it was before, plus people would praise you. =D

Well, I think only for the leaders, or worse, the people that stayed home. Not only did you have to leave your home to cross a continent to fight an enemy, not knowing if you'll ever return. And even if you manage to succeed, you're still surrounded by said enemies.

Yeah, crusaders had quite a trek. Though if you took part in the Reconquista or were part of the Baltic Crusades, they were more successfull?
Also I know this sounds ridiculous but the Crusaders really died happy on a crusade, since they knew God would forbid their sins, so maybe they weren't that afraid to die. Although this only happened with only the most fanatical people, others weren't that stupid and knew what they put their stakes at when going to war.

It was more beneficial for the Pope than the common person, yes. This is an example of the rich man's war, and the poor man's fight.

What? No, it was a poor man's war. The rich just funded it and led it for them.

Have to agree with you. The poor were all really religious fanatics, and the pope just pointed his fingers at the Muslims, and the poor went all hating on the Muslims. I don't understand why they would be religious fanatics, since the Bubonic Plague showed that god could care less about Christians :).

Eh, someone probably proclaimed it was a sign of God to show them that they needed to go on a Crusade. Anyone who objected would probably get burned at the stake anyway.
