So I have been noticing a trend in the news. When they get to politcs, I notice that religion, or specically Christianity, has a major impact in our politics. This is absoluty retarded, as we inteded for this not to happen in the Constitution, and the idea of religion at all is just one big base-less conjecture! For instance, it holds back scientific development, it holds back sosial reform, and it can influence our elections and public opinion of the government. For instance, if a famouse scientist endorsed a president, that would be NOTHING compared to if the Pope endorsed a president (I don't think he can, but I assume you get my point). I was just wondering what you think about this. I wrote the entire thread quite poorly, but I hope you get what I am trying to say as I am not the best writer.

Most people don't give a damn about religion. Or if they do it's only because they think they have to. If any of them discovered free will they wouldn't be. Just redneck conformists. It's the politicians who and try and use religion to sway the weak minded, but most people are indifferent.

For example, one of my friends disregards evolution, not because he truly thinks it is wrong, but because he thinks he isn't a christian if he believes in evolution. Debating with people like this is futile, and not worth talking about, and neither is this topic really, as most people understand what I just said, and this conversation may as well be over.

Well to me as an outsider, it seems as nærly all Americans are generally very religious (as in they go to some form of church) and i have seen how it affects your news (Bill O Reily) and politics.

Yes, but then again, the view on the US from Europe is heavily affected by the whoever-shouts-the-hardest-is-heard-the-most-syndrome. I'm sure that if you ask around the Netherlands about US citizens, you'd get descriptions of Santorum, as he's been in the news here lately after he made up some bullshit about the Netherlands.

It's scary that selling alcohol is still prohibited in the country. Hell, it's scary society over all.

Considering 78% of the US population consider themselves Christian, 59% consider themselves very religious, and 84% follow a religion, it stands to reason that there should be at least some religious context in politics. I don't see how religion holds back at least some social reform, most advocate work programs and state provided healthcare. While the Pope endorsing a candidate would increase that candidates popularity among some Catholics, the majority of Christians in the US are Protestant, and therefore hold not bonds with the earthly leader of the Catholic faith.

I need to go right now, I'll comment more later.

Religion has far too much of an influence on American politics. In Canada it varies it shows the exact same thing in Alberta which is pretty much Canada's Texas especially with the Whiterose Party but Quebec is also very religious but is the most forward thinking of all the provinces.

Not even close. Some of the founders were deists, but the overwhelming majority of the colonists were run-of-the-mill Protestant Christians.

True, they were still religious, I never said they weren't. But that doesn't mean they didn't intend on separating state and religion. Although, that line of thought might have been developed later on.
