Why the hell am I debating with you. This your basic history, dude. I f you don't know Adam Smith what the hell are you doing? You could also read up on every economic theory that isn't a fringe one, and that's all capitalist. That movie was a true story and a perfect example of how capitalism works. You make up stories about those you are debating with to make them look bad, but whatever. I'd bet we're on the verge of prosperity. That doesn't mean at all that he thinks adults should be denied healthcare, that is just absurd and another example of your slander tactics. Besides, healthcare is private. People can become rich for any number of things, you were claiming it was definitely his (inherited) intelligence. Which is jumping to unsure conclusions just to keep your argument alive. Dude I'm not reading a story.
Holy mother of Jesus fuck. You cannot have an opinion on capitalism. You cannot have an opinion on economics. You should count yourself lucky that you get to have an opinion about what you're going to wear.
So once again you choose to ignore my post in order to attempt to discredit my opinion. Just because you feel like you have to go on some personal crusade. Once again, I will state, that I live in a fucking capitalist country. That gives me all the experience with it I need to have an opinion. Just like I don't care if someone in, for instance, North Korea, has never heard of Karl Marx. They live in a (so called) communist country, so they can have an opinion on it. I think it says something that the American education system has said nothing about Adam Smith, and not introduced his books to any of my classes. If hes that important, its something we should have learned about in like 7th grade. And once again you decide to go along with Kali's crusade against teh ebulz red menace. Read above. Many movies are "true stories". That doesn't mean even half the details are true. And I want you to tell me how probable it really is for someone to get that lucky. It was a good life story, not a lecture on why capitalism works. No, no I don't. If I made up stories I would be a lot more creative than that, I'm a good writer. And quite a lot of the time I do put something about those I'm debating with, yes. But almost 100% of the time that is followed with "I think" or "I believe". I'd bet against that. You would be more convincing if you had some proof. Slander tactics? LOL. That was my interpretation of what he said, maybe he should be more clear. And? Healthcare shouldn't be private, in my opinion. I never said it was his inherited intelligence. I wasn't really talking about intelligence with him at all. I said "we shouldn't dismiss people because of the position they were born in". Charlemagne was born into a position of wealth and power. So, he got a good education and therefore became a powerful and seemingly intelligent leader. Its unfair that any one person should be able to pay for better intelligence. Then don't respond if your lazy and can't read a few sentences. I'll respond to the rest of your post once I actually can.
Actually, I think Mr. Bonora did mention Adam Smith now that I think about it. Also, we spent a few days learning about Karl Marx and Adam Smith in Honors World History this year. About Adam Smith, he is the Karl Marx of capitalism. Not ever hearing of Adam Smith before in your life, especially when you are living in a country who's economics is based off of his principles, is like me calling myself a diehard socialist, yet never hearing the name Karl Marx at all in my entire life.
This debate over capitalism and communism is still going on...in a World War 1 thread. I don't know how you guys can live with yourself.
I'd argue that Adam Smith is a more important figure than Karl Marx. He is literally the father of modern economics.
I'm not in honors World History. Just teaching it to the honors students is even worse, because it makes it look like the teachers have given up on teaching "average" students anything more than basic history. I want you to ask any anyone over 14 who you talk to in the next week whether or not they have heard of Adam Smith. Then repeat the same process with Karl Marx. I almost guarantee that if they only know one, its more likely to be Marx than Smith.
I learned about Adam Smith in World History freshman year, and that wasn't an "honors" class. GM is just stupid.
YOu also had arguably the dumbest history teacher on the planet. Even my mom has heard of Adam Smith...And she knows absolutely nothing about capitalism, or economics in general. Anyway, Adam Smith is arguably the most important figure in shaping modern economics. Modern economics is based off of him. He is the father of modern economics. Karl Marx does not even come close to him as far importance in economics and the like. It's not the fact that you haven't read anything by Adam Smith, it's the fact that you have never even heard of him, that concerns me.
This. I don't want to get involved in this debate because this thread is supposed to be about WW1, but I'll just say one thing: If you don't know who Adam Smith is, then you don't know anything about economics or capitalism and you shouldn't have an opinion on either of those as a result. Where you live is irrelevant.
Going back to WWI, I think the Central powers could very much have won if they were able to make the best of the offensives they made later in the war, as well as creating more Stormtrooper units. With the Russians out, and the French troops mutinying they might have been able to make some ground, though the fresh American troops still would have been a challenge.
There is no way this thread is going back to WW1 after all this. Just keep the debate alive, its interesting. And I'll reply more later.
I think they could have won in 1914, if only the offensive hadn't stalled. The Germans didn't have any hope after the Americans joined the war in 1917. The Germans were exhausted by that point. Of course the French and English were exhausted too, but the Americans were coming fresh into the war and had a huge amount of industrial capacity. I wonder what would have happened if the Americans didn't join the war. You would have 2 sides that are both fighting on their last legs. A white peace maybe, or a fight to the last man?
True. Shes still smarter than my teacher. Some teachers and every single student that I asked, did not know who Adam Smith is. Half of the those students and all those teachers did know who Karl Marx is. If Adam Smith is really that important, then yes, I should know about him, but the failure of the American education system is not my fault. I have never heard Adam Smith mentioned in any books I have read, I have not heard him mentioned by any teachers, and you were the first person on the forums I have seen mention him. Germany would have won. The British and French had no fresh troops left to commit, while the Germans had many troops that could have been taken off the Eastern Front and thrown at the west, because at that point Russia was defeated and in the middle of a communist revolution. After the Germans won WW1, I believe they would have gone and intervened in Russia, and stopped the Soviet Union from ever existing. Or, the common answer for anything alternate history on this site: KAISSEREICH WOULD HAVE HAPPENED!!!!
So what kind of economics classes have you taken? I remember learning about him very early on, because he is, you know, basically the inventor of economics. Are you seriously saying that your teachers don't know who he is? I've heard some bad things about the American education system, but this is just silly. That's like having a physics teacher that doesn't know who Newton was. That's a good point. I wonder how they would have handled the peace treaty if the Germans won in 1917/1918. Would it be on the Versailles-level of extortion, or more like the treaty after the Franco-Prussian war? If it's the former, we might have seen the fascists rise up in France and England instead and have some sort of reverse World War II with France and England as the 'axis' powers.
There is no "american education system", I hate it when people say that. It just so happens that New York's education system is better than New Jersey's, I guess. Because we learned about Adam Smith.
She never knew there was an American revolution...(my mom) Karl Marx just gets talked about more because his ideaas are more radical. Adam Smith is infinitely more important than Karl Marx for the reason that modern economics is based entirely off of his principles. You forgot that Germany already tried a last gasp offensive right before the Americans joined, and that failed. After that, whether the Americans joined or not, I think Germany was done. Most of the german people were already starving and had been for over a year.
