I have a very specific army with a very specific commander with very specific details: The Prussian army of Frederick the II, more commonly known as Frederick the Great. While some credit can be given to his father, the pro-militariztion Frederick the I, Frederick the Great was a very skilled army commander and indeed made the Prussian army the most well respected and greatest army to ever exist. It was a disciplined, well oiled machine that not only fought the Austrians in the War of Austrian Succession, taking the province of Silesia right under the Austrians noses and then holding on to it for the duration of the war, but in the 7 Years War, when it was fighting the French to the west, the Austrians/HRE to the south and the Russians to the east, it was brought to the breaking point from fighting on three fronts. But they survived, no territorial damage dealt to it what so ever, and this is all thanks to Frederick the Great. It laid the foundation for the armies of the Prussia under Bismarck which fought Austria on its own territory and France on its own territory, and won both. It laid the foundations for the armies of WW1 and 2, both highly disciplined killing machines that were feared throughout the world. And this was all thanks to Frederick the Great.

@Romulus211 Looks like your warning about necroposting failed to stop others from doing the same. Oh well. :)

The US. Alexander was great 'n' all, but Greek hoplites against guided missiles will only ever have one outcome.

By that logic, the greatest army in history is just the most recent one then.
I reckon the (ancient) Greeks would be better at making missiles than the yanks would be as hoplites.

Spartans were absolute shit. They relied on Thebes for the most part. While their infantry was cool and stuff, there ways of recruitment were retarded.

First they held a baby over a cliff, and if it cried, it would be chucked down said cliff. Then they would train train train train train train and then, when they became a soldier, they would never go into combat, ever. It was like they specifically don't put them in combat for the fact that if they lost, then Sparta would be doomed. There recruitment only went out to the main citizens, not the slaves who were almost always double/triple the population of the Spartans.

Not every Spartan went through the Agoge, the ones who did were a formidable force at the time, there's a reason why they're so famous in Greece. As a military force they were fine, their government was poor though. But for the sake of the thread, I still will say either the Roman Army during the early Empire or Napoleon's army.
