I just had this thought today. Some of the most notable battles in human history were giant campfests. Examples:
    1. Battle of Gettysburg
    2. Battle of Marathon
    3. Battle of Thermopylae
    4. Battle of Alesia
    5. The Entirety of WW1

So, my question is: Is just digging in and doing nothing a viable battle strategy?

As you pointed out it works sometimes. I can see how digging in can win battles, but not Wars.

Yea it's a great strategy as long as you are the one defending. That is actually the big advantage of being the defender, the enemy must come to you while you can can dig in and wait for them.

"Invicibility lies in the defence; the possibilty of victory in the Attack."

Yes, it is a perfectly fine military tactic.

It's a very good tactic, but not always the best strategy. There is a difference.
Also: You should have made this a poll, man. Oh well.

Actually Ottomans & Austrians failed horribly at camping in WW1. But no, camping is not a legit strategy if you want to win a war.

There's a big difference between camping and defending, biggest campfest ever was the western frontline of World War 1.

Its a legitimate strategy, but not a viable way to win a war.

It would've won WWI. Too bad all the military leaders were giant incompetent dicks.

Well yes, but if you look at it the allies won after they broke through the trench lines in 1918.

I know, but if two imbeciles fight with each other, one's got to win.

The only chance they would have has was in the start of the war after that, it would be a bloodbath, it would force the countries to sue for peace, Germany would have been starved by the brits though, but at what cost?

A smaller cost. Do you have any ideas how many people's lives got wasted in useless offensives they knew they couldn't have won?
    War, war never changes.
