You are right in saying that FDR represented the change in the Democratic Party. You are wrong in saying that he was the change in the Democrats. He could not have been elected if the party did not agree with him.

That is what I mean that in a way kind of started with him, but would take time to change the Democratic party, really I would say it wasn't in till the 70s that the party became like it is today.

No, I mean that the change came before him. FDR was the representation of that change that occurred through the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Okay, sorry I thought you were talking about after. As you can see I'm not that great with politics I'm more of with just history.

I guess my only response can be to say that the crises we face are just not big enough to unite everybody, and are not equally spread out. If the same amount of people starving in Africa were starving in Europe, I'm pretty sure most people would work together a lot better.

And what I was talking about mainly is having enemies. If the human race could find an external enemy, I believe we would all get on a lot better.

I know what you mean about an underlying motive. For the reason I believe humanity would unite in a crisis is because we would all then have a need to work together to survive. This can be seen as just a selfish instinct to survive, or as feeling empathy towards others. It can be looked at either way.
