As you all hopefully know, in recent years Private Industry has been taking bold steps in relation to space travel. What with the economic scuttling of NASA and all. Recently, there were even plans to send a Private Rocket to the ISS with supplies, however, it failed to even fire off its engines.

    http://www.independent.ie/world-news/americas/private-rocket-suffers-failure-to-launch-3112791.html

Now, my question to you lot on the forums. Do you believe that Private Industry moving into the field of Space Travel is a good or bad thing? To me, I find it highly disagreeable. Purely due to the fact that Space is practically an unregulatible (You can try but Red Tape would more than likely be measured by the metric tons) subject.

Even more so, I do not see how the profit motive and the explosive expansion of power for the certain businesses/and or corporations can benefit the field of Space Travel and Exploration. But that is purely my opinion, a rather biased opinion at that so yeah. What are your opinions?

They'll never have the capital to fund the space programs needed to do the smallest tasks. They build a rocket and everyone's like, "Aw, isn't that cute."

So no, it's not a problem.

What if there was some alien space ship where everyone on board was always happy, got everything they needed through some Star Trek style replicators, had the secret of eternal life along with a cure to every disease and were all pretty attractive and had lots of sexy parties, still bad?

Only if Takei's Facebook page is inaccessible from the ship.

Well they're aliens, they probably wouldn't be trying to connect to Facebook. Then again they do like to kidnap rednecks and probe them for no seemingly good reason, other than to mess with them.

I don't particularly see why private industry in space is bad. Sure, there isn't much point to it currently, but as technology gets better, which will happen with private funding, then it will be easier and cheaper to get to space and then who knows what will happen.

Not bad. Impractical for the most part. Unless you can think of a way to manage multiple priceless business assets sprawled out over a vast vacuum while also trying to stay ahead of the competition, satisfy company shareholders, and some how turn a profit form this madness, I think it might be best we stick to the simplicity of a single well-funded organization like NASA.

Like I mentioned, as private industry invests more into space travel, then the technology will improve, communication will improve, and those things will be much easier to manage.

That's all perfectly fine from a sci-fi perspective, but the reality of space travel is slow. Much too slow for the high-speed nature of business in fact. I doubt we'll ever see any push from the private sector beyond Earth's orbit.

We seem to have different opinions on the way technology develops.

Welll it's gonna happen eventually. As our technology advances and as corporations and buisnesses become more and more powerful, why would they not expand into space?
