To be honest, I had to laugh when the students in Quebec protest a roughly $1500 raise in tuition. Where I'm going to school, American University (a fantastic school by the way), with a roughly $30,000 a year grant, I will be in debt to about 90 times that increase (about $90,000).

That's a shocking and ridiculous amount.

Thank you. I got my scholarship based on high class rank and high SAT scores (SATs are like a general apptitude test that kids in high school have to take to get into college, in case you didn't know). It surprises me that there aren't many merit based scholarships in the UK, at least from what you've said. In fact, the basis for the scholarships you mentioned seem entirely racist.

Not really. American is a top private institution. I knew what I was getting myself into and am fully confident in my ability to responsibly pay back my loans. I was just commenting that, at least to most American college students, the Canadians are being a bit silly.

When you look at it from the Canadian point of view it is rather upsetting, having cheap education for a long time for it to change drastically, it might seem a bit silly to us Americans but that is just the way it is here. We have always payed a lot to universities, and the Canadians haven't. They have been used to this lifestyle for a while, so I don't see it as entirely silly.

I know, but my gut reaction was the laugh.

    Edit:
Also because the "cheap, affordable" community college in this area runs about $3000 a year (though it is ranked 5th in the nation).

Hey, Quebec, you're getting a better education and much greater and diverse career options than people in the other provinces, why have a shit fit over this?

So, how many times have you been able to use that statement against Kara in the past week?

    I've seen several. :p

You guys whine about gas being 4$ a gallon, we think that is silly. We take pride in our low tuition rates.

Well the protests have now been replaced by the psychopath porn star killer Magnotta which also happens to be in Montreal.

I think that slight adjustment is closer to what you meant.

I think he's saying it's a slippery slope and they don't want to descend into the same pit as us.

    Also, this is relevant:

Hey guys, I just want to point out that in six months, I'll get paid at least 300 dollars a month to go to school.

The UK had something called the Eductional Maintenance Allowance, where if your family had a low income, you could get about £30 a week to go to sixth form.
Our current government scrapped it as soon as they came to power, and I must admit it doesn't bother me at all.

I'd rather have better teaching than some money.

And anyway, the people that got the EMA only ever spent it on cigarettes and alcohol.

Yeah in Denmark it's called café money, but I don't mind getting it as I need money for a new PC... for studies of course...
