If the Rich Use Up More Resources, Should they Pay more?

So, I was at the book store ordering Herman Cain's latest book, "9-9-9 An Army of Davids" (don't worry guys, its on the way in 6 business days) and I was talking to one of my friends about the wealthy and taxes. He said that the rich use up more resources and that they should pay for it. Now, you probably think this like in terms of buying more things than a poor person can "like more houses, more cars, etc.", but not its not. He said the rich use up more police, courts, transportation systems, national parks, IRS workers, space flight use, and military. My answer: WTF?!

Now look here, I understand an argument saying that if a rich person uses more resources (in terms of like buying food or buying paper) they should pay more, but the things that this person brought makes no sense and I was wondering if someone could clarify for me.

Here are my points:

Police - So I am guessing he means that the rich cause more crime that the police react to, but to me that makes no sense. There are more poor people causing crimes than rich right? Now I know some on this site can argue about illegal things banks do and the police don't go after them, but in this case, its who the police are going after. I think the police would 10x likely to arrest someone who is poor that is robbing a bank compared to the rich. I simply say that there are more poor people causing crimes than rich, because there is simply more poor people in the world.

Courts - A court of law. So are rich people in more court cases than poor people? I disagree here to, simply because there are more poor people than rich people. Its confusing!

Transportation Systems - Are you more likely to find a rich person traveling on a bus than a poor person? What about a subway? I do not see many rich people on them.

National Parks - Here is where I lost it. How does a rich person "use up" a national park? A national park is simply a national park right?

IRS workers - Again wtf????? I do not see how a rich person "uses up" more IRS workers. Yes they have more money for taxes, but that is obvious.

Space Flight Use - So if a rich person is on you need to an extended the width of a space shuttle by 10 feet?

Military - The job of the military is to protect the United States. That would mean protecting citizens, but again there are more rich than poor to protect.

This all makes no sense to me, can someone clarify?

It is silly to think the rich suck on those things like vampires. Now given some of the rich are abusive with their money & make a lot of frivolous endeavors. However there is also the amount that contribute to the private sector, help overseas, etc.

No its silly to think that. The Rich usually travel in private vehicles.

I think your friend tried to say that the wealty people buy themselves out of situations Like:

If the police have a problem with their buisness or if they didn't obey laws,driving rules etc. they can buy themselves out of the situation and get away without any penalties. And the same is for the court.

In military wise,what about the pro military lobbyists in the government?There are a lot of politicans who are paid by military companies to say things like:"Let's continue the war in afghanistan becouse we just have to kill every terrorist to make peace in the region.And to sell more weapons to the army by private companies to make them recieve a shitload of profit."
And that is one of the examples why in the Bush years there wasn't a big advance,like killing Bin-Laden.

Certainly a rich person would not use up more of the states resources than a poor person, it is silly to say so.

However, this is no argument for saying they should pay the same rate of tax, as a poor person needs more help from the state, and it should be made available to them, whereas a rich person does not need the help, so should help others through paying more in tax.

A rich person should pay more in taxes, yeah. But its because they can easily afford to pay higher taxes, not because of any bullshit your friend said. Your friend sounds as stupid as my step dad.

I agree with this. The rich pay more because they have more money. If you make a billionaire pay 100,000 dollars, its not that bad. But if you made my dad pay 100,000 dollars, you just took away a year and a half in salary.
