Total Freedom of Speech is Bad

Well, it's not that common that people get shot, but in the Netherlands we have quite a high amount of those-who-shout-the-hardest-get-heard-the-most types. In general, the Dutch tend to be quite blunt and rude, or so I've heard. I don't find it unreasonable at all that people from a completely different culture are...shocked, even, by the behaviour of the people here, nor do I find it unreasonable that the people here think the immigrants are overreacting.

In matters like these, it's important to try and understand the basic thought processes of both sides, and even more important is that those two sides understand the matter from the other viewpoint. It'd save everyone a lot of trouble.

I think there will always be people on both sides who over-react, and the vast majority have to ignore them and get on with their lives.

I don't give two shits if what I say offends somebody. The reason being is people say something every day that would offend a lot of people somewhere. If I got depressed every time someone said something offensive to me, I would have committed suicide the week after I died. Nobody is in any position to tell people what is acceptable and not acceptable because EVERYBODY has a different view on that. As long as I am not committing any PHYSICAL harm or making realistic and serious THREATS, I should be able to say whatever I want.

The government, elected by the people, can tell people what they can and can't do.
Racist abuse is just another thing that a government and judicial system can either allow, or make an offence. Surely it is up to the people of a country whether or not they want a certain action to be illegal and not accepted in society.

Telling people what they can and can't do is different than the government telling people what they can and can't say. Silencing a man because he offends you is despicable.

Just because we are a democracy doesn't mean that the majority can bully the minority. If everybody but one person believed that the sky was green, should the outsider be silenced?

Except that the US isn't a Democracy... its a Republic.

Certain parts of the government were designed specifically to prevent what the Founders called "the tyranny of the majority."
