Basiliscus was the brother in law of the eastern Roma emperor Leo. To help the western Roman empire, Leo embarked on an ambitious invasion of north Africa to conquer the vandals there and restore the territory to the western empire. To achieve this he had over a thousand ships built and 400,000 soldiers ready for the invasion. His only mistake was choosing Basiliscus to command the operation, onnly because he was his brother in law.

Surely under any other commander the vandals would not have stood a chance. It started with Basiliscus landing 40 miles away from the vandal capital, Carthage. In a matter of five days he managed to get the fleet wrecked and most of his army destroyed without fighting due to his incompetence. He fled as soon as ur first battle started back to Constantinople, leaving the small remnants of his army co fused and promptly destroyed. He was sent into exile in Thrace.

But that wasn't the end of Basiliscus. After the death of Leo and the expulsion of his successor Zeno, the army (whine he nearly caused to cease to exist) hailed him as emperor on the basis that he was the only malefamy member of Leo alive. He proved to be just as bad a steward, as a general.

Despite the isaurians beings largely responsible for his rise to emperor, his first action was to massacre every isaurian in constantinople. He rewarded his sister for helping him expel Zeno, by executing her lover and forcing her into retirement. He then went about dealing with Zeno by sending his isaurian general after Zeno ( who was an isaurian) apparently forgetting his massacre of isaurians. The general, illus, marched straight to Zeno and co conced him to reclaim the throne with the support of his army, and Zeno readily accepted. Meanwhile he began alienating whatever support he had left by trying to force the Christians that Christ lacked a human nature. This prompted a local holy man, Daniel the stylite, to leave his pillar(he was a hermit) for the first time in 3 decades. Thesis prompted Basiliscus to stop trying to promote this idea.

Basiliscus promised a visit defense of Constantinople from the oncoming army of Zeno, but there was nobody in the city willing to waste their lives for Jim. The people threw open the gates and cheered the man they had thrown out of the city 2 years earlier, such was their hatred for Basiliscus. Basiliscus was sent off to cappadocia, where he was enclosed in a giant cistern and starved to death. Thus ends the story of the most pathetic leader.

Meanwhile the western Roman empire fell to odoacer, at a tons when the eastern empire was In no position to help them thanks to one idiot, Basiliscus.
