As in the goals for the government, like making laws and expanding industry.

Surely anything that gets in the way of absolute power/makes the process of government longer is counter-productive. To government of course. Not so much for the governed, or at least those who get paid to debate stuff and head committees. Obviously, the whole thing depends on your goals; if autocracy is your aim, it is counter-productive, if anarchy (or less state power), then it isn't. If you're some sort of centrist, then you can say liberal democracy is a happy medium between totalitarianism and anarchism.
So, after all that, I have no conclusion whatsoever. Buy hey, everyone wants their thread to be replied to before it derails, right?

Yes, it can be counter productive because it gets in the way of things being passed efficiently and fast, and all this partisan shit is destructive to the democratic process. That said, "Democracy is the worst form of government besides all those other types".

So I'm going to vote no.

It can be, yes. But it's still the best form of government.

You're probably the nicest authoritarian (I believe that's what you are, aren't you? Sorry if you're not.) I've ever seen.

No, but trying to regulate the franchise based on age is simply the wrong way to go about it. It leads to an electorate that cares little for politics and is easily swayed: particularly by modern media and the "popularity" celebrity-esque contest that is modern politics. Short term-elections, in this system, are also particularly uncooperative to advancement and when that is combined with the above it creates a totally bat-shit oppositional approach to legislation.

A benign dictator would obviously be terribly efficient but as far as I am certain it would only work for one lifetime, mine, and after that it would be open to all sorts of possible corruption.

So what your saying is we should have a dictator because we would get things done, that only works if we have an enlighten dictator and even still you have to take into account he got into power undemocratically and is still a dictator. Always remember that no matter how much you love your Caesar or your kim jong il they are still dictators.

    TEAM DEMOCRACY FTW, AUTHORITARIAN BASTARDS.

Ever heard of implied democratic consent. It actually does make a fair bit of sense, particularly if you have a relatively detached military and police force (or a very populus-centric one).

Military dictatorships are the best form of statist government, but I value individual people, so democracy if the best.

Well people can still vote into power people who take away their rights, though I strongly encourage people not to.

Dictatorships are bad, unless I'm the dictator.
