That's hardly a historical stereotype. In fact, I'd say it's alive and well in much of the world.

Stereotype: Spartan training include a lot of pedophilia to the boys in training.

In truth: The "boyraping"was more than simple sexual abuse by the adult. The older male took on a role of quasi-parent and guardian, and was held accountable for how the youth grew up,to make sure he was couragious, strong, and of good moral character. The youth in turn had a role model and proven warrior to emulate, and gained a certain status from his relationship with that man.
As to why, consider the Spartan training regime. At the age of 7 they were separated from their mother. They would not have an opportunity to be with a woman again for almost 20 years, after they had proven themselves as warriors. they moved around where the Spartan women moved about and trained in physical activites themselves, often in a state or partial or total nudity. When the boy becomes pubescent, the youth is now dealing with raging hormones as well as an incredibly difficult training regime. So by encouraging sex with other males, especially with an older," more settled" adult, the Spartans took the practical route of finding ways to release the new-found sexual urges.
And no, it didn't make for a nation of pedophiles, or even homosexuals. The vast majority of men went on to marry and procreate, and certainly there's no indication that the Spartan women felt they were being neglected or deprived. Indeed, it went so far that a Spartan soldier might get a comrade to bed his own wife in order to produce a superior child, especially if the couple had been having trouble concieving. So while there no doubt was flat out abuse in some cases, generally the sexual relationships of the Spartan men and boys was far more complex than that of boyrapers.

Myth: The United States was the first democratic republic since the Roman Republic.
Fact: There were infact republics after the Roman Republic and before the United States, one such prominent example was the Venice city-state.

Venice was practically a Noble Republic. The United States form of Government brought an ENTIRE new meaning of republicanism.

If one looks at the United States in its early history not much seperates it from a Noble Republic, infact it wasn't until around the election of Andrew Jackson were the property qualifications for voting abolished.

Stereotype: The Battle of Thermopylae was a tactical victory for the Greeks who delayed the Persians long enough for the city states to unite their armies.

Truth: It was a Decisive Victory for the Persians who would go one the conquer half of Greece and it was only then were the Greeks able to get their shit together to push the Persians out.

I don't think that many Americans still think Russia is communist, to make it a stereotype..

And Hitler definitely was devil incarnate.

I doubt that, considering they hadn't met the Celts yet. Most likely, like with just about all early Roman achievements, they stole it from nearby cities.

Federations are just centralised forms of government, @thelistener you should specify that Russia is a federal democracy (allbeit a very corrupt one).

Myth: Julius Caesar's last words were "Et Tu Brute"
Fact: The words were invented soley by Shakespeare, over a thousand years after his murder. Shakespeare most likely based this off from the other myth that Caesar's last words were "Kai su Teknon" (Greek for "You to my Child"). Caesar's real last words were most likely screams of pain from the bastards stabbing him 23 times.

Myth: The German Army was the most the most mechanized army in ww2.
Fact: The German Army in WW2 was just as depedent on horses for food supplies as was the Kaiser's Army in WW1. Infact most historians assume that had Germany had modern suppy transportation they could have adavanced even further during Operation: Barborassa.

Myth: The Germans were the most technologically advanced army in ww2
Fact: While the Germans definately had some impressive tech there were cases where they were outclassed.
-In the air the British Spitfire and Americna P-51 put most German built planes to shame.
-On Land the Soviet T-34 was the most advanced and impressive tank throughout most of ww2
-And finally on sea the German Navy had almost no advantage of the far superior British and American navies.

Federation means that you have a ton of different ethnic groups & cultures inside your borders.
