Not sure if this is the right place or not for this kind of question but here goes

(Important to note that I am not annoyed, just curious and would like an answer if possible)

Are moderators allowed to personally edit posts without notifying the poster?

I say this because I posted on this thread http://josefvstalin.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1686&start=105 (fourth post from bottom- poster name of Artismoke) which originally included a picture of American celebrations after the death of Osama Bin Laden. This picture was soon taken down and I simply assumed it was too big and did not follow the site rules of picture sizes. However, when re-reading my post recently I noticed it has been changed by someone other than myself and can only assume it was a moderator as nobody else knows my password. This picture changes the intended message of the post (that message being that followers of Osama Bin Laden may be angered by the mass celebrations) and seeks to make me look worse off. I have received no notifications and did not see anything on the site rules stating moderators could do such a thing.

Is it possible anyone could find out who did this and ask them if my original post too provocative and was made less serious to avoid an all out delete of the post? I did not mean for it to anger in such a way if that is how it was taken.

    Thanks

Mods are allowed to edit posts if they feel it is needed. I always put edited by Chelsea at the bottom.

Weird... It's not coming up in the moderator logs that anyone edited your post... I would think it was a dead link or something, but then it would still show up when I open your post up... Don't know what to tell ya lol

Strangely enough there isn't anything in the rules about editing posts, but there should be seeing as it's our primary tool for enforcing the rules. I'd imagine we're going to quickly amend the rules to explicitly allow moderators to be able to edit your posts. Whether or not we have to notify you, and to what extent and form these notifications take I couldn't say.

I was just about to post what Pedro did. I just checked the logs myself and nothing.

Given that the need to edit a (serious) post only happens a few times a day I don't think it's that much of an issue in any sense.

Yes, but it never gets abused, especially when Stalin does it because he is extremely responsible as an admin and would never do such a thing.

I have never seen a mod abuse the edit post feature. Most of the editing I have done has been related to fixing page stretching.

I've edited double posts together and as a matter of aesthetic pleasure have grammatically corrected a few, but never changed the content of a post itself.

This goes for me aswell. Like if there's spelling and grammar mistakes it's going to annoy me to no end till I fix them.

You had 6 grammatical errors in that post.

I dunno, spell checking other people's posts sounds a little patronizing if you ask me =P

I agree. Mods shouldn't edit posts without good reason.

I do it without their knowledge, so it's not like I'm showing them up or something. Just trying to make it less of an absolute disaster unfit for human viewing.

I personally have never edited someone else's post to fix spelling or grammar mistakes. I'm not a grammar Nazi. xD

They made their bed, so let them lie in it. This is an internet forum. The content of posts is the only read on people we can get.

I, for one, would be pretty annoyed if I found out you were spell checking my posts behind my back.

While we're on this topic I'll ask you never to do that to my posts, I'd rather learn from my own mistakes and correct them myself.

Well if I'm being 100% honest here it's been done exclusively to one user who routinely has terrible grammar and I only edited their posts a long time ago when I thought it might make them shape up a bit. Didn't work.

Whenever I edit someone else's post I put my name at the bottom of it. I believe this should be done really.

    Who?

I mean, just saying "one user" is pretty vauge. That's like, 2,000+ people!
