can we make it mandatory for mods to state the reason a thread is locked prior to locking it?

Mods usually do, unless it's super obvious that they don't need to say anything.

Depends on the rule they broke. I mean if it was unclear than ok, but if it's obviously a troll then they should just lock it.

Most of the locks are just from the creater deciding to end the thing which we should probably take away from the Coffee House and Offtopic, at least if it has been 3 pages or so becase sometimes the creater locks a perfectly good thread.

i only bring it up because somebody locked a "I'm leaving" thread (its unlocked now though) without any reason and thought this might be a good rule to put on paper even if most mods do it already.

The issue was alleviated. We usually do drop a reason (or in my case, a devilishly clever post) to clarify why the thread was locked.

In the case of OPs requesting a thread to be locked, we will always lock it in that case. It is their right to request it to be locked and should stay as such. I too state the reason for locking a thread. Like Matt said, we already brought it up so there should be an understanding on that now among staff.

A thread is preponated by the members who post in it, not the creater of it, he simply starts it. Thus, he alone should not have the ability to lock a successful thread. However in places like Tech Help and such, it probably doesn't matter.
Anyway, if it's been 3 pages or so, it should alleviate the creater's power to lock or push for not locking.

A thread is made up by the people who post in it, not by the founder. Why should the posters suffer because the founder is annoyed?

Well beyond the obvious reasons (defamation or privacy invasion issues), I would disagree, and say that the idea of the thread is unique to the OP. Once that unique idea becomes perverted or ignored there really isn't any reason for the thread to go on. The OP should have the right to close a thread when he chooses because it's his idea and his argument (unless were talking about "the official" style threads.

No we "kill" threads when they get off-topic and it just turns into spam. Also how are we "nazimods?"

    Mods-
    See good thread? Kill it!
See rule breaking? Enforce the rules unequally and even break the rules yourselves.

If you think we kill good threads then your idea of a good thread is spam. No we don't enforce unequally everybody is treated the same except Stalin he can whatever he wants.

we're like some bad ass cop movie aren't we? Making the rules and then breaking them, killing anything that gets in our way. We leave behind a trail of banned users and locked threads to get to our one goal: getting the ultimate troll of this site! A-Team music go!
