So i was watching this program tonight about comparing the Roman empire to the american "empire" and if you think about it...it makes quite abit of sense... i just thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss as i know there are a lot of roman historians on the forums xD

Also as a side note... on the show a group american history teachers at some field trip where asked about the topic. And one woman said "well the americans are similar to the romans. I mean everyone speaks english for trade of diplomacy just as everyone spoke latin at the time." I thought that was a good comparison, but the world spoke english before the americas where america... when the british had their empire most people where speaking british for various reasons, because britian had all the power... so im not sure that holds up...

Anyway, also perhaps the british empire could have been compared to the Roman empire and american "empire".

We're not very similar to the Roman Empire. We're much closer to the British Empire.

Yeah i know this comparisons been done before but its just interesting... and i was slightly drunk and watching trashy late night tv xD

Anyway... at least some of the comparisons that where brought up (that i remember) where quite smart... The idea of Augustus making himself essentually a god like or prominant figure in their history. Similar to washington and jefferson. The idea that how augustus was seen at the time and how washington is seen now. The fact that on a dollar bill is the phrase "Out of many comes one" which was a roman army phrase about leaders. And then the idea of the president saying "So help me god" or "In god we trust" i forget when exactly, but still...and this was compared to Augustus starting the phrase "Son of a God" which the roman empire used from then after.

Also washington and Augustus where compared as the first "Emperors" of thier nations and tbh it made sense... washington started a country that ended up dominating the world... as did augustus. So you know... i though it was an interesting comparions... and as i said i was slightly (ha) drunk so i didnt exactly think of "hey this has been done before" lol.

Yeah the US pretty much control the world nowadays as did the Romans (speaking about known worlds).

But I think the romans were more baddass simply for the fact that I don't like the idea of the US being better than everybody (which is not true). =P

I can see the comparison: you could say that when the empire was severely bitch-slapped by the rampaging ginger hordes of Caledonia it was Rome's Vietnam.

I don't see how you could compare ginger nutters swinging heads around to Asian farmers. Nevertheless, a good analogy.

I believe that was actually the comparison on the show...i was sort of out of my faceby then so it was ether them or the goths xD

Etherway i do like how they pointed out that both augustus and washington where warmongerers but for various causes... which i suppose apeals to my own personal bias xD But the show was really really good, the comparisons where done fantastically and everything made sense... and i believe there where some famous american historians and roman historians on the show nearer the end when they where talking about the empires bullying/manipulating others to do what they say. So the show itself wasnt anti-US or ati-Rome, was just generally a interesting show ^_^

Clearly, also, soon Canadian and Mexican tribes will begin ravaging the country and the Western Coast will break off to try and preserve American culture.

I think it's more likely to be the other way round, given the current financial state of the US.
