America may still be the most powerful nation on Earth but does it still fit the superpower description??? America has already lost much of it's international credibility. Our economy is dying and China is catching up. America's military is still the most powerful in the world but our credibility, economics and demographical unwillingness to wage war is severely restricting our power.

The strongest military in the world makes you a superpower despite everything else as long as you have the best military you are a superpower

hmm... When asked the same question last week on the report, he replied that we are the only super power, and not only that but China is 50-100 years away from our level

China is only seen as such a rising influence because it's tapping its previously untapped economic potential. But, as much as the material land growth can do for them they lack innovative capacity that exists in the West, most notably the US. They aren't seeking to offer further innovative incentives and have yet to even fix their own brain drain problems. And, realistically, they don't have too many venues that they can expand their influence in. Unlike most Western nations, a friend of China has to accept their geopolitical views (most notably on Tibet and Taiwan), and China isn't a proponent of "no-strings attached" foreign aid. In fact they are quite fond of offering incredibly unfavorable loans to regimes whose only other alternative is to collapse. And to top it all off they frown strongly on FDI.

Having heard about the massive, unoccupied apartments and shopping malls that were built just for the sake of growth in China, I look forward to seeing how their economy shapes up.

America is still a superpower but I see a future where although America will still be very powerful it will not be the sole global superpower (300 million-ish citizens means it will always have sway in the world). Hopefully the withdrawal from Afghanistan will see the US go back into peace mode for at least a while.

USA lost its superpower status right when USSR collapsed. Now it is a great power among few other nations.

That is how super power was determined during cold war, not in modern times.

There's no question about it. America is still a superpower and will be one for a long time. They are years ahead in terms of both production and economy (even with all of the recessions, bailouts, debts etc.) than China. Those who follow current trends often see America worse off than it really is.

There seems to be no argument about military power and prowess, so I won't even go into that.

Still China is years behind. They only have one aircraft Carrier and most of their weapons were based off Russian design.

I really dont have a problem with China becoming a super power as long as they dont use their newfound status to bully other nations into doing what they want.

It still can determine whether you are a superpower. If no major power can defeat you in a conventional war, then you are still a superpower

Let me correct myself, it is not a single factor. Sure it does matter, but is not most important.
