http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2011/11/28/total-war-shogun-2-fall-of-the-samurai-announced/ Does this mean that maybe a "Victoria, World war 1, or industrial era" Total war will be possible? it really looks like, also what are your thoughts on the new DLC or Total war going into the 18th-19th Century?
I think they could make one in the 19th century just not the 20th century. They already have a mod for the US civil war and the Zulu wars so why not make a hole total war game that takes place between lets say the 1830's to the 1880's.
I could see that but I really think you can't go into World War I or past that because than your gonna have to deal with too modern of weaponry like tanks and aircraft. And by that time tactics really changed from the days of standing in lines firing at each other like you see in Empire and Napoleon total war.
I'm hoping that this doesn't disappoint. Railway networks and new sea unit features look promising for the most part.
The TW gameplay is built revolving around regimental combat. Once you hit ACW era, the regiments go away. Heck, by the ARW, regimental combat was already in steep decline. To make a game beyond that era would take TW out of the mechanics that it is based on. Then it would become like Company of Heros or something like that. Not that that is bad, just that it makes no sense to do it. For one matter, they have little to no experience in it. For another, that kind of RTS is heavily contested. And lastly, CE has a virtual monopoly on the kind of RTS that it makes. Why would they take leave of the comfortable position that they hold?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hs4Wq_ADxQ&feature=feedu Here's a trailer for it. It reminded me of the movie 'The last samurai'
I think they can certainly do a World War 1 mod. You guys ever play the Great War mod for Napoleon Total War. In their next version they are adding tanks.... But I think this makes it clear that they are gonna do a Victorian Era Total War primarily focused around the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian war. edit: I want a Rome 2 though.
The last samurai was indeed a stupid movie but I enjoyed it. I probably will not get this DLC though.
You can't. That is my point in why this is a bad idea. The TW series is built on regimental combat simulation. It was never meant to have combat like in Company of Heros or Men of War. The entire mechanics of the game breaks down and the tactics change utterly. Marching your troops into battle in formation in the time of bolt-action rifles? That is sucide. The ACW generals learned that the hard way. It simply fell out of use after the introduction of such long-range, accurate, and powerful weaponry.
I'm guessing in the game we'll have to eventually face off against troops armed with bolt-action rifles who are still using Napoleonic tactics
For the reasons I posted, I still disagree with the choice, but I will look into the game nonetheless.
Fall of the samurai looks epic. Although I would rather see a total war game much like empire. With an expanded map, and alot more playable factions. Everyone is right, if CA where to go past that certain time period it would render the style useless. It would completely go against what CA has established. Noone wants too see Nazi's running around with MP40's using napoleonic square formations. Noone wants too see Tanks in diamond formation. If CA wants to continue forward they need to make a new formula. But in my opinion the best thing to do would be remake rome total war. Fix diplomacy add in a few new features and various campaign options for victory.
