I strongly disagree with the law but its banned because its seen as a symbol of male oppression, for all we know these woman could be beaten if they dont wear it by their husbands. I disagree with this as we could take care of that seperately, but its not about racism.

Yes its idiotic and offensive to Muslims, but who fucking cares? I for one support banning religious practices to troll theists.

I don't support any religion, but if these are banned then wearing a cross should be banned.

What about the argument that it's a security concern, Che? Also, don't they have a really strict dress code in North Korea? I'm surprised you would be against government telling people what they can and can't wear.

It's not the same thing. It's not just a symbol of religion. Men don't have to cover their faces. Only women. To me it's a symbol of men being better than women as well as a religious symbol.

Regardless it is not like it is law like it is Saudi Arabia where women are required too. But if they still feel they want to then they should be allowed too.

Also CorB... If you had read my other post you would realize the reason I am outraged about this is the fact that it is direct discrimination against one group of people.

Muslim is a race?!?!?! Last I've known Muslim is a counterpart to Islam, as to Catholic and Christianity. But I do agree with it not being right, they shouldn't restrict that if they have the right to religion. Now if they didn't have the right to pursue their own religion, then by all means, go ahead.

Ask a Muslim about what it means.... They view it quite differently. Even in American many Muslims choose to wear it. I had a lengthy discussion the other day with a Jordanian friend about why she wears her Hijab and I was quite shocked with her level of commitment.

I detest this bigoted law. I don't care if they are trying to preserve their culture, this is not how you do it. A government should not be able to dictate what a private citizen can wear.

I have a certain admiration for France in they really don't give a shit. About anyone. they ban religious symbols, they deny religious freedoms and while I disagree with such acts on the grounds that they contradict my world view I can't help look and laugh.

Also you can be racist against Muslims, if you treat a group as if they are a people, and not just a religion as is done with Muslims often then you can be racist against them. When people talk about Muslims they are often talking about Arabic Peoples for example.

So in conclusion, I probably should be bothered by such laws but I find it very hard to care. I'm an externalist about beliefs so my motivation to care in this case is different from my belief.

In the states a lot of schools have banned hats. I don't know about in France, but it's not without judicial precedent.

    And balaclavas

I think it should be optional, as in it's up to the individual whether they want to wear it or not.

You can turn a lot of things into deadly weapons. Shit it would be easier just to stab someone with a pen or a pencil.

A full veil that covers the entire body and face is a bit different than just a hat and sunglasses I think...
