I've been wondering how do the modern Brits view William. Do you think he was a great man, an asshole, or your mixed in your opinion. Thanks for responding
In my opinion, as a half Brit, he was a great commander and his takeover of England really defines modern day England. Him taking over not only gave England a new royal family, but also a new culture and a new language. The castles he built (such as the Tower of London) were some of the biggest of the time. I think he really started England on its path to world dominance. I'm interested as to what @UtterlyImpeccable has to say about this.
Well, I hope you weren't expecting anything remarkable or enlightening from me, Mosh. I mostly agree with what you're saying, he influenced the development of Britain and the world so much that to dislike him would by a hypocrisy, considering the foundations of much of all our lives is based off his actions. His reign saw the introduction of the feudal system to England, which lay the foundations for an extremly organised society, allowing for social, economic and agricultural developments for years to come. Soon after he took power, the Doomaday book was written, which catalogued every town, village, manor and farm in England, and had information on the possesions of every landholder in the country. So yeah, I have no reason to dislike him, and I think many in the UK would feel the same. Having said that, it is a widely known fact he only won the Battle of Hastings because some of his men ran away, which can obviously be expected of the French.
I don't know about the Brits, but I think he's pretty badass, with his whole invading-and-conquering thing.
Well, you were the only British person I could think of at the time. I'm by no means in a position to gauge what the average British person might think, but you're much closer to that position
I think people would be grateful for what he has done to make a outstanding country cause I sure would feel that way.
