The question is it better to lead a life where you avoid suffering from wrong doing, or lead a life were you avoid committing wrong even if you may suffer from the wrongs of others?

I am getting this question straight from the Plato's Gorgias, which is in my opinion the best Socratic Dialogue (and I suggest everyone read it even if you are even remotely interested in philosophy, it is possible to get full translations just by googling it). Its fairly certain that this dialogue is not a direct transcription of the encounter, but a relative reworking of it by Plato in which he uses the arguments from the characters in the dialogue to set up a number of points which he addresses in more detail in The Republic. Anyway the dialogue get's really awesome towards the end when Socrates begins his argument with Callicles who basically argues that nothing exists beyond power and pleasure and the philosophical type of life which Socrates is leading is just a bunch of nonsense and he needs to grow up and get with the program. Of course Socrates refutes this and so begins what I feel to be one of the most interesting and well thought out arguments in any piece of philosophical work.

In the argument the issue of what is the best type of life to lead is brought up several times and eventually Socrates and Callicles seem to agree that there are two types of life which you can lead, a life were you avoid suffering from wrong, or avoid committing it. Callicles argument is that because pleasure is what truly matters in life you should seek to avoid suffering from wrong, and the only way to do that is to attain political power. Socrates believes that power is fine, but you need knowledge in order to guide that power so you can avoid doing the wrong thing with it. Earlier in the dialogue it's referenced that he thinks this way because without the knowledge to guide power you end up with a society were people who have no idea what they are talking about convince the clueless masses that they do in fact know what they are talking about and their will should be done and society just ends up being a dysfunctional mess.

Unlike in most Socratic dialogues were it is very clear the Socrates just destroys those who he is arguing with, here things are much more ambiguous. It's not clear that Socrates wins the argument against Callicles, and Plato leaves the door open for the argument to continue because I believe he himself is not sure which life is truly the better one to lead.

I am in a similar boat, I have been weighing both sides of the argument and have been unable to decide which lifestyle is better, but if I would have to choose I would say I am leading more towards Socrates on this one. So I ask you, which is the better lifestyle to lead?

    Yes

No, unless you want to for what ever reason.

The question is whether to avoid suffering through wrong doing, which might ultimately result in even greater suffering; if you commit wrongdoing on too grandiose a scale then you will invariably antagonise those around you leading to the potential for even greater suffering than if you had not reacted in the first place.

Then there is the alternative: enduring suffering through the avoidance of wrongdoing. While this would make you appear more of a moral person, it would also leave you open to being seen as a pushover and a doormat.

In this scenario I would say the former is preferable, although the art of wrongdoing should, as with most things, be used in moderation.

How does avoiding wrongdoing equate to being a pushover?

What I'm saying is that if you endure suffering for the sake of avoiding wrong doing then there is a greater chance of being seen as a doormat, rather than if you're prepared to do wrong for the sake of avoiding suffering.

    Wow, that shizzle is complexizzle.

Anyway, I think that in order to live life to the fullest it is necessary to avoid all types of suffering as much as is possible. Reguardless of consequences.

Which, incidentally, is why I think people are retarded when they say they wouldn't want eternal life.

"It's better to have loved and lost then to never love at all"- I don't remember.

The same could be said for wrong and suffering, You can't avoid doing wrong so the Latter is kind of unlikely

    IMO atleast.

So the choice is 'screw everyone over' or 'roll over and take it like a bitch'? This is why I don't do philosophy :)

From past experience I can say that I would rather be the bully who pushes people than be the nice kid who gets pushed.
But then this brings up the topic of extremes, why must the world be black and white? What of all the shades of gray? And if you live life in color then black and white aren't always options, there could be much, much more.
That is how I chose to live. Wherever there seem to be just two options, it's usually because you forgot about the others.
It is possible to live life without committing wrong and still live a pleasureful life, and at the same time you can commit wrong and still suffer, very, very much.

But I'm no philosopher, for all you know I'm blowing this shit out my ass.

Also, I'm sure this made sense in your head, but you worded the question confusingly.

Is it Better to Avoid Committing Wrong or Suffering From

The question is it better to lead a life where you avoid suffering from wrong doing, or lead a life were you avoid committing wrong even if you may suffer from the wrongs of others?

Well in Plato’s Gorgias (which you have to excuse me my exact knowledge on it is only limited to what me and my philosophy teacher had discussed on it. I will use this as an excuse to go read it) however from what I can recall it seems as though, Socrates has the stance of that it is far worse to inflict evil than to be the innocent victim of it. (for the person who inflict evil is an unhappy man like the rhetoric orator who because he inflicted evil is unhappy) if I recall he said committing wrong is not the worse of wrongs. It is committing wrong and getting away with it, for to get away with it is not to be punished for in punishment there is discipline which, make them more good and cure them of their evil ways. He argues that as soon as someone as done something wrong they should go see a judge. For to not see the judge would allow unhappiness to grow inside your soul.

Now Callices argues the other side that is far better to avoid suffering. That suffering wrong is worse than doing it. That there is no wrong and it’s only by a judge that is wrong and thus there is no wrong outside of court. Callices also seems to carry a very Might is or makes right philosophy that the strong exercise there will and rights over the weak and that is nature for the strong to dominate over the weak, and that weak seek justice as a way to stop the strong (Socrates I would think would argue that such a “strong man” is a unhappy man and to become happy he must turn himself over)

Now it is from this I can conclude on these three things
    1. Lead a life were you avoid committing wrong even if you may suffer from the wrongs of others ( which is Socrates stance thus Socrates is right)
    2. That Callices and Nietzsche would get along just splendidly and agree on a lot of things like the entire strong are better the weak and well the entire might makes right philosophy you get the idea
    3. that rhetoric is based used against oneself (or at least that’s what my philosophy teacher told me and that was the main theme of the book was it not?)

So to finally answer you question, it is far better to lead a life were you avoid committing wrong even if you may suffer from the wrongs of others (for the wrong man is a unhappy man)

If you are to decide that you cannot be happy if you also evil then sure. Whole concept of evil seems pretty artificial anyway though.

Why not just a bit of both? Finding the perfect balance between the two viewpoints would make much more sense than just agreeing with one over the other.

I think we all knew that already. The question is which is better? Therefore i'm going to have to say that i'd rather avoid suffering from wrong than committing it.

Then what's the point of the thread if everyone knows what the answer is? It's silly to even argue which is better if you already support them both. :|

I would think a religious person would not want eternal life because eventually they would want to die and go up (if they committed good or whatever there faith requires) and go into a Paradise with all there family members and there maker who gives theme there favorite flavor of ice cream and every day there is magical full of sunshine and happiness.

and also i would assume eternal life on earth would get boring unless you where emperor of the earth.

The only morally superior course of action is to do what you think is right. Your method of determining what's right and what's wrong doesn't change what you know to be true, and you simply cannot run from your personal ethics. Objective morality is rather silly.

Ideally if everyone avoided committing wrong then there would be little suffering to have to deal with.

Also, if you believe in Religion and all that, it's how you get a good afterlife. So certainly it is better to avoid committing wrong.

    Both options are impractical though.
