On ABC Nightly News some hours ago, Obama finally made his stance on the issue clear.

The gay marriage argument is one that has ben discussed on these forums before, I don't see the need to bring it up again here. I'll say little more on the issue that that I think it was the right thing to do, and that Obama is genuine. This is the place for politics discussion.
Politically, it was a pretty brave move, but also a good one. Following are some reasons why. There are some assumptions of American behaviour from a non American, so feel free to disagree in the comments.
    • The number of winnable voters, who might have voted for Obama but for this pronouncement, would be minimal. It seems likely that the large majority of people powerfully motivated by opposition to gay marriage are completely lost to Obama.
    • Liberal Democratic voters just got something to get excited about, and to donate, campaign, and block-walk for.
    • Gay voters (and donors, and their families) are seeing the beginning of the end for the biggest obstacle to full legal equality. Tremendously motivating.
    • Obama took a huge step to permanently binding the younger generation of voters to identify with the Democratic party. Support for gay marriage is overwhelming among younger voters.
    • Can you imagine how charming the coming shitstorm from the right is gonna be? Do you think it's going to win a lot of moderates into the GOP fold?
    • Gay marriage is unpopular with black voters, but Obama is uniquely positioned to get 90%+ of black votes regardless. What are they going to do, vote Romney? And isn't it likely that the President's stance could lead to a softening of opposition in the black community?
    • Latino voters not only lean on the suppourting side of gay marriage (59%), they have been kicked in the teeth by Republicans so hard in recent years. Gay marriage will only increase Obama's standing with Latinos, what with all the zealous anti-immigration laws, "show your papers" laws, and the general contempt for Latinos prevalent in much of the activist right.
If Obama wins, this will probably be seen as a brilliant risk. If he loses, it might scare Democrats off of supporting gay marriage for another generation.
So let's make sure he wins, OK?

While I would say bravo to President Obama for his statement, I can't help but feel that this might hurt him in being reelected.

My view on this has been, if homosexual want to get married let them. To me the Government should have no say on who you can and can't marry.

Well that's 1 more vote for Obama.

Also, can someone fix the spelling error on support, it's annoying.

Honestly, Mitt is digging a deep hole. I see that more people are going to vote because of the economic situation and if mitt loses the young, homosexual accepting people and homosexuals in general, than he is going to lose.

The only way I will back Mitt is if FL Senator Marco Rubio is his running mate. Maybe if Jeb Bush is VP, but probably not.

Thank you Obama. This, this right here is what we need. What we have needed for a while in a president. I don't support forcing priests/preachers to marry a homosexual couple but I see no reason as to why they shouldn't be able to get married. The matter is that it doesn't hurt the opposition, they're just clinging to the past or the teachings of a book that says it's wrong, despite the fact that it harms no-one. It is not right that a straight couple has options that a homosexual couple does not and it is not right that that is because it offends them and their "moral values", nothing more. In my eyes it is no better than racism. A while back African American's could not do the same things white people could do, saying you can not do this based on sexual orientation is no better to me. It's the same mentality and we need to grow out of it. Progress is needed and he is supporting that progress. If I wasn't going to vote for Obama there is no way I wouldn't now.

Eh, the young people / people sympathetic to homosexual unions were never going to vote for Romney anyway. Similarly, the social conservatives who are angered by this were never going to vote for Obama. Elections are about turning out more people who believe in your message, no convincing the other side or even the middle to vote for you.

Isnt this kind of like complete hypocrisy for the Republicans in saying that they support personal liberty and the freedom to choose whatever crap people want but oppose an issue that definitely is an example of that?

Anyone who says that and does oppose it is indeed a hypocrite.

Nope, also it's been argued in the past that marriage is an equal protections (14th amendment) issue, because marriage has many civil benefits. Good cases to read are Loving v Virginia (the case that declared anti-inter racial mariage statutes unconstitutional) and Goodridge v Department of Public Health (the Mass case that upheld their gay marriage law)
