    A stadning army would bleed finances. Unless it was being used actively to secure resources and for pre-emptive strikes. Then the balance is paiid for and it becomes worthwhile. Naval power is really the big player for 1st world powers though. Britain has two super-carrier in production atm; neither as big as the American stuff though. We need to focus on that, and also space warfare.

    I don't understand why everyone keeps saying a conscripted army is of any less quality. It isn't. Israel has one of the best armies in the world, and only like 20% of our soldiers joined voluntarily.

    Anyway, I agree with Link. Compulsory service sucks dick. It stole four years of my life here in Israel, and I hate the fact that another thousand young men are going to lose those years too.

    Well Israel is a special case where they do have a quality conscription army but that is rarely the case.

    you are right conscripted armys can be well equipped its just that majority of countrys can not "afford" (or they just dont want to waste so much money on military) to buy good and modern weapons for high number of soldiers.

    You still need a sizable conventional force to not get runover in times of war. Special operators don't have much of a place in a conventional battlespace. Look at how the Israeli's misused Sayaret Metkal in the Yom Kippur war, or how SF units played an almost non existent part in every conventional war until really the War on terror campaigns (speaking about the invasions, they are perfectly suited for the tip of the spear of coin or coist ops)

    A national guard is not really a standardized combat force. Too long periods of inactivity would make them ineffective, so you would either need to train them all the time and make them a standard army or leave them in the role of peacekeepers.
