I think compulsory service is a good idea, for it bolsters the military of the nation in question and adds experiance to the conscripted members of society. I am however, being a hypocrit here because I would hate serving my country's military.

Both, force everyone to get a little experiance if your invaded for some reason, but a small professional army just in case the need arises for it.

Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world going into Kuwait. They got their asses bombed back to the stone age before US,Saudi troops took the fight to them. Even at 50% strength the Iraqi army was pretty large. Nonetheless they got their asses served to them on a silver platter.

That was because it sucked ass. It was more an army that found guys, gave them guns, and called them soldiers.

Mainly because they couldn't afford to do all the training and proper equipting that America could do(to a less extent Saudi Arabia as well). Combined with the fact that the people who surrendered tended to live longer than the people that fought to the death and that they were fighting against someone and not for Iraq, they were ground into dust.

The problem with our political system combined with compulsory service is that there is a disconnect between the wars and those who decide to make them. At least in the Roman Republic those who sought war also risked death by serving. Politicians in the front lines of war. Today though, politicians can dictate wars from the comfy seats of parliaments with no real danger. The wealthy, publicly-educated elites point at a map and say "fight there", and the poor state-educated privates go to a land far, far away killing people for god knows what reason. It isn't right. Although I'm not in favour of compulsory military service, I think there must be a better alternative.

Well, it worked pretty well in the case of the Soviet Union. There is some situations where it is best to simply overwhelm a enemy as opposed to a drawn out conflict though, most notably during a withdraw. That's when a quantity based army and strategy can win a war. However, for the most part, quality does indeed win.

the Siberian reserves that came in during the siege of Moscow were better trained than you would think. and also quantity beats quality when those numbers are supported by the most effective intelligence service in the world (KGB, mossad weren't around until the Jews went back to Israel after the war)

I still don't get why people would want to join the military. It teaches discipline and gives life experience, but there is much safer and more uplifting ways to do that.
