The issue of the Falkland Islands has resurfaced over the past year owing to speculation that huge oil deposits exist beneath the surrounding waters.

Argentina has once again stated that the Falkland Islands belong to them and other Latin nations, most notably Brazil and Venezuela, have expressed solidarity with their fellow South Americans.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez made a passionate speech about the need to end colonialism while Brazil refused entry to a number of ships bound for the islands.

As a Brit, I believe that the islands should remain British. Why? Because the majority of the population wish to remain British and I believe the will of the people should overrule geographic location.

In any case, Argentina has never ruled the Falklands since its inception and I don't see why it should now.

But perhaps you disagree? What are your thoughts?

It's sort of convenient this arguement flares up again after the prospect of oil being discovered in the terrority of the Falklands.

Generally the tabloids are bullishly proclaiming that we should retain the islands owing to the war our soldiers fought and died for. The BBC as ever retains a neutral stance on the issue.

Internationally, there's a feeling that more and more nations are turning against us. Even the United States has urged us to open dialogue with the Argentinians although it's not overly surprising when you remember Obama really doesn't seem to like the British.

Our last parliament under the Labour party seemed willing to negotiate the issue, however post-election our new coalition government has not made a firm indication as yet.

Well, for the first time, i hope that the English will win the argument. they won it , not to sound five but, fair and square. they kept the islands having to travel thousands of miles when the Argentines only had to travel maybe like 50( im wrong on that number im sure) miles. they dont deserve the islands, unless their willing to break out in another conflict, which they would lose.
