What do you think was the best trained army in history? Note that it can not be a modern army. i.e. no later than world war 2. I am in an argument on youtube with a guy that insists the British army was the best trained in the world. Now dont get me wrong, the British army was pretty good but in my opinion was nowhere near the best. I personally believe that the Roman army at its height, was the best trained army in the world. They seemed to just be way more effective and not to mention. they were the most disciplined army of their time.

In terms of sheer brutality of training Sparta had at one time the best trained army on earth. Even though I like rome more then sparta you can not beat training that starts as soon as you are born and the training was even more grueling then then legionary's. Not to mention that they also disposed of the weak looking babies so only the strongest and toughest would survuve.

I am going to say that the German army was the better trained in World War II... and the Romans, at their height, were the most formidable force the Mediterranean had ever seen... and Napoleon's was the best of it's time... seeing as I can't decide, I am going to put each army in their respected groups.

    Antiquity - Roman Army.
    Medieval - Mongol Army.
Industrial - Napoleon's Grand Armee or the British armies.
World War II - German army.

I would definatley place rome's at second place though, the legionary training was hard as hell and at the rome's height the legion was undeafeatable on the open battlefeild.

Well, now that I hear mostly every modernized army teaches Sun Tzu as a basic in military tactics, I'd say it's decided on what people know that government does not want them to know, if we could learn every top secret project every country is doing we could come to an agreement but now, I don't think an agreement in anything concerning which country has the best in what could be reached.

He mowed down Austria, France, Spain, Russia and Sweden. All of the greatest armies in the world and all very numerous (except Sweden).
