    The Italians during WWII...

But on a more serious note, I have to go with the Spartans in this one.

I don't think Hitler is entirely to blame here. Fact is there wasn't such thing as 1 'Wehrmacht'. There were many different sections of the German army who almost had a sort of competition going on. Everyone wanted to gain favor with the Führer. Plus, army-officials appointed purely for political reasons often used their own propaganda as a 'valid' argument for a certain military action (Lebensraum -> Barbarossa, or the refusal to retreat after the Red Army-counterattack kicked off). This resulted in poor decisionmaking at some times.

And one more thing, researchers are still busy looking through archives of the Third Reich. Not because of the inefficiency of our historical research projects, but due to a complete lack of organisation within the Nazi administration. The Third Reich was a giant mess from the moment it existed, and in my opinion such a state is not a eligible for the title of best army in the world.

Yes, there was Wehrmacht, the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe. What you're saying is not true, because I know what you're trying to say, the SS and the Wehrmacht were entirely different things. The Wehrmacht was the army, it isn't in no way related to the SS, think of them as the Führer bodyguard. The SS was kind of an elite corps separated from the army. And Hitler is to blame yes sir, he caused the disaster of Stalingrad, with the policies of no retreat while they were being swarmed by the Soviets.

Also you shouldn't double post, anyway did I welcome you to the forums?

The Wehrmacht was the title for the entire Nazi German Armed Forces with the Heer (army), Kriegsmarine (navy) and Luftwaffe (airforce) being the names for the different branches.

And no one liked the SS because they got favoured by High Command. They got better equipment, better assignments and were pretty big ego trippers.
A misconception of the SS is that they got better training. It was quite the same, they were just suicidal maniacs/"highly disciplined" (depends on how you view it) when assigned a task to complete.

Thanks, I will mind my posting in the future. And in reaction to your post I would like to say that the German army was more divided than many people think they were. Plus, I do think Hitler is to blame for the loss of WWII, mainly because he started a war that he would never be able to win. I only tried to say that it was a little more complicated than "The German army was all-powerful but Hitler failed miserably as a leader". Because that is what many people believe.

Also, I'm glad to be part of the community, thanks for welcoming me :)

The German army was the most disciplined and trained at WW2, but I don't think they were better trained than the romans or the British, or the Prussians, even the Swedish under Gustavus Adolphus were very well trained.

A lot of warrior cultures had people that were trained since childhood. But otherwise not as a harsh as the spartan one.

i cannot belive no one has siad the mongols yet ! every male in the mongol society was a warrior, breed to fight from the moment they were born. trained in horseriding and archery from the moment they could stand. They were both the best and the most well trained army that have ever existed. in my opinion.

I agree with you, Genghis had a very efficient army, not numerous hordes like people said, he won a lot of battles with tactics and the ability of his riders. Well another army on the list.

I'm pretty sure he did favour diplomacy over battle, though, the Mongol army didn't fight as much as you'd think.

As for Spartans, training wise they were among the best, but as for equipment, they're lacking. Relying purely on phalanxes just isn't the way to go. I'm going to have to go with the Roman army in its glory days.

I know that's true, that he did favor diplomacy over battle, but the Mongols did fight a lot of pitched battles.
