Why not? The Native Americans were here first. We treated them horribly. The least we could do is give them their own independence.

Sure. Just don't take away our Iriquois reservations. They fuel the local criminal enterprise, which I hope to join someday. Probably next year, or over the summer.

Where are the lakota mostly concentrated?

    edit:[IMG]

I imagine you can give them a remote part of Wyoming.

There couldn't possibly be any sort of precedents for giving Native Americans small amounts of land to practice their culture on. *sarcasm*

Yeah we seem to give them false hopes of independence a lot...

Can't they just be happy with casinos and exclusive land rights?

I think one issue would be what this would cause a domino effect. Manifest Destiny happened long ago. My problem is that if we give the Lakota land another tribe will ask for land, then another, then another, and before you know it the United States may not even exist.

All the more reason to give them the land. >.> Seriously though we stole their land from them, they were here first. We committed genocide on the Native Americans and broke most of our promises and treaties to them. They deserve their independence back.

And? They were here first. They got dibs. We butchered them, gave them small land plots, butchered them again, and now they run casinos.

If we give their reservations, or maybe some land surrounding them, independence, then most of the US would remain intact. It would suck for us here though, because they would set up border security around the reservations, and our way of life kind of centers around going to their tax havens they call reservations to buy stuff. Plus they have some pretty big growing ops that most people don't know about, but you didn't hear that from me. <.<

Also the article posted implies that the Lakota have actively declared independence, and a quick trip the Lakota Republic's website reveals that no such declaration has been issued. Unless of course they're keeping it a secret even from themselves.

Fun fact, every single treaty made between the US and any Native American tribe has been broken (as of like 2005).

I read somewhere that in the 90s the New York State government formulated a military operation against one of the Iriquois tribes due to a dispute with the thruway running through their land, and them threatening to shut it down due to a dispute over taxation on the reservations. I might be able to find it.

The problem is that if giving them all their land back you are essentially giving all our land to a total of 0.9% of the population as of the 2010 census which I quickly checked on the Wikipedia. You are in a sense destroying the country that over 300 million people call home and giving it to 0.9% of that population and dividing it into slices. The good news is that this will probably will not happen. My point on Manifest Destiny is that it happened a long time ago and its no like us modern Americans had control of our ancestors. Who knows? Maybe some Americans who are on this site and were born in states like Montana and Colorado may not even exist today if Manifest Destiny did not happen because there ancestors may had not moved and met in that state. Now I think we do need to pay more attention to what Native Americans wish, but we cannot fix the past and we cannot destroy this country.

    They are essentially separatists.

We don't have to give it all, they're of a completely different culture and they won't just demand everything back because of some words on a paper. They just want some room, some space that is actually habitable. Nobody is suggesting taking back the entirety of the country, no one in there right mind would demand it or allow it (today).

Dude, what the fuck. Nobody is saying to give them the entire nation's land. Just their reservations, and maybe some land surrounding them. And manifest destiny already happened, and it's retarded to think it can be reversed, and equally retarded, if not more retarded, to think that anybody thinks it can be reversed. So what the hell are you talking about now?
