Keep an eye out for this two-part documentary on the History Channel. It's a very compelling documentary about the Nazi's rise and fall from a German citizen's perspective. Really, the only reason Hitler came into power is because he took advantage of German desperation and fear during their economic collapse and even then he was never elected to any office. His wasn't as charismatic as people would like to think. He just used the dire situation to create a large political party that preyed on German desperation and was GIVEN his chancellorship position, then the Reichstag fire happened and he assumed emergency power and destroyed the Communist party, leaving no possible party left to challenge him. He then proceeded to "rebuild" German pride and honor and eventually the German people would learn that the foundation of all this "pride" and "honor" that Hitler restored and expanded were founded entirely by lies and deceit and in the end, he left Germany in ruins, millions of Germans dead, it's honor crushed, it's pride forever tarnished, and a shame that will stick with the country and it's people forever. His final slap in the face would be to take the cowards way out and leave his people and his country to reap the suffering he sowed unpunished.
I recorded both the parts of the show and watched it yesterday, very good documentary. I think i will watch it again because of this thread.
I have watched this two part documentary twice, actually. It's all very well put together. It made me very sad though when they talked about the Russian rape of Berlin D=
Yea where Russian soldiers raped over 2 million German woman, and 1 in 10 of those woman committed suicide after.
I actually used this documentary as a source for a paper I had to wright in freshmen year of high school (last year). I then proceeded to watch the documentary again on my own, without pausing it ever 5 minutes saying "oh, I can use that as a quote!" I have to say, it shed some light on Hitlers rise to power. I quite enjoyed watching it, in the sense I learned something (which is incredibly rare with TV these days),not that I enjoyed hearing about what was done.
I read about it in a book, honestly, theres a lot of stuff out there that you can just go and pickup and read, documentaries are cool and I like to watch them, especially ones about world war 2, but I've read all about Hitler's ways of gaining power in the Reichstag over many books. What about the raping of millions of Russian families during German occupation of the Soviet Union?[/quote:2h3nbgcb] And what about the fact The Soviet Union under Stalins control killed 20,000,000 of its own citizens.
