Im posting this because it pains me that such a historic site has been raided and vandalized by a bunch of extrimists from outside this beautiful city. This represents the raping of a very important part of rich harritage in Africa.

This is a very sad story. Mali was supposed to be one of the most stable and successful countries in Africa, and now it's being invaded by islamists, just like that.
    A thoroughly scary thought.

It is only true that nobody cares about Africa due to how unimportant they are. We all know this and in the attempt to not turn this into the "Africa sucks" thread I will say that it is sad.

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of Mali. Mali was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining. Today, our nation saw evil -- the very worst of human nature -- and we responded with the best of Mali.

The search is underway for those who were behind these evil acts. I have directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

This is a day when all Mali People from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. Mali has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night. And God bless Mali.

Sorry it's true. Nobody cares about Africa because they are unimportant. Well at least that is the common American opinion, and I cannot speak for the rest of the world.

Although I personally believe a most of Africa's problems were caused by the Europeans.

On topic I want to see what Eastern news says before I completely make up my mind.

Why would Muslim extremists desecrate a mosque?

    Mali sucks lately.

They had recent troubles with the Tuareg nomads in the north of their country who were returning from the events in Lybia heavily armed and pissed that their people were being pressured to be assimilated into the rest of the country by the Malian government. The Malian government sent out their military to deal with it. You know what happened? It became a **** rout for the Malian military. Then the Malian gov. allegedly announced plans to reduce the military's size just as they lost the entire northern reaches of the country. A group of dissenters later known as the junta seized power in the capital as the Tuareg rebels in the north declared the independence of the Nation of Azawad. Then the Economic Co-operation Organization of West African States (ECOWAS) kicked in sanctions on the junta and the capital. The junta agreed to hand power over not to the president, who they wanted fired, but to the people's congress and the sanctions were lifted. A new president was brought in, but last I checked, the junta aren't too happy with him, though he vowed to fight the Tuareg rebels. ECOWAS sent a couple hundred troops to help and France said that it wouldn't be doing anything without an official UN mandate, which they said they weren't looking for.
Recently it appears that Islamic militant groups have hijacked the rebellion, though several members of the Tuareg have told Western media that they don't support the actions of Al-Qaeda, which apparently has some influence in the rebellion.

MNLA = National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad
AQMI = Al-Qaeda support in Islamic Maghreb
