Here's a situation posed in my 11th grade AP US Language and Composition course for debate a few years ago, and I found out a while later that this was the topic of a movie that I can't currently remember the name of: You will be paid 1 million dollars to push a button. However, when you push the button, one random person in the world will die. Will you push the button? Edit: Now let's say you know that the person is someone you do not know, is not yourself, nor would have anything ever to do with your nor your family. Would you push the button then? I would from the start. Would you? Edit 2: Also, is there any circumstance where pushing the button would be morally acceptable? Edit 3: Second Scenario: Let's add a second scenario: You are told to push a button. If you push it, someone in the world completely unrelated to you or your family dies, and you get one million dollars. If you don't, you will be the person who dies should the next person offered push the button. Do you push the button, killing someone and guaranteeing you will not be killed should the next person push the button? Or do you take the risk of death?
No, it is just money. I believe the movie was called The Box and was based of an episode of the Twilight Zone.
I would push it. It would make me deserve whatever was coming because of it though. Wouldn't it be ironic if that one random person actually turned out to be you by chance?
You greedy bastards. I wouldn't push it. I suppose I might, if I used to money to provide food and medical care, thus preventing further deaths. That would be the best choice from a utilitarian standpoint.
I would push it and then use most of the money for the college funds of myself, my friends, and my relatives. The rest I either give to charity or have a massive orgy filled with all the "sinful" acts you can think of. (hopefully I kill a person that was already going to die anyway)
Seriously, why the hell do you guys need a million dollars so bad you'd kill for it? You don't need riches and extravagant things to be happy.
Let's add this: The person is someone you do not know, is not yourself, nor would have anything ever to do with your nor your family. Would you push the button then?
Yea, i would have no problem pushing it. If it doesn't affect me... Meh. Seems really evil to say that, but a million dollars could really help out my family and relatives and friends, and those are the people i care about, so, i think it will balance itself out, i think you might do more good by getting the million dollars, depending on how you spend it, of course.
Have you seen the movie this was in? It was done to thousands of people, and everyone who pressed it would end up having someone close to them die from someone else pressing the button. The point is that you have no right to complain were this to happen to you now.
That may be for the movie, but I never stated that it would be offered to anyone else in the dilemma I presented in the OP.
I didn't say that you did, nor was I talking to you. I was trying to get these fuckers to show some empathy by relating the situation to them.
Which reminds me, I would like to pose the question: Is there any circumstance where pushing the button could morally acceptable?
No, I wouldn't. In my opinion, money in it's current form, is Immoral. And furthermore, the death of a person can NEVER be justified in my books. If I were given such a box, I would burn it, so that nobody may harness it's evil.
Way to be the party pooper, man. All that money bro and there's a chance we could've killed Justin Bieber with the box.
