Basically as the title says...mine is the Fallout series. There are tons of quests, the characters are very likeable, the dialoge and action are tons of fun to mess around with and there is a HUGE community. That is one of my favourite parts, the incredible mods for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. So guys whats yours?
Agreed it is the lore mainly, there is alot to learn, plus I forgot to add that the DLC's are incredible
Basically this. Bethesda has made some of the best RPGs that I have ever played. My only real gripe with them is the consistant lack of a serious simulated economy. Of all places, I have to turn to Fable for that.
Morrowind. Easily Morrowind. So much to see and do. Virtually endless content, I've played over 300 hours over the years (not all of which on steam sadly, this is an approximate but I think it is pretty accurate) and am still finding more. Awesome story line, very versatile combat and magic system. It doesn't have any mercy on stupid people, but I certainly don't see it as a good thing if any moron can play a game and be successful. Oblivion doesn't even compare. The only thing it had up on morrowind was voices (which had it's downsides) and a functioning arena system.
I love the characters and universe of the Mass Effect series, if you count those as RPGs (the second one admittedly isn't really an RPG, even if it is my favorite game.) I loved Oblivion and also have high hopes for Skyrim. Unfortunately I've never played any of the fallout series nor Morrowind. The original Deus Ex's status as an RPG is also arguable, but if you count it then it's definitely right up there with the best. The way that game handled player choice was so far ahead of its time it blew my mind back in the day. I also loved the story and cyberpunk setting, along with the themes it touched on. It was incredibly replayable because the gameplay was very variable.
Lufia & The Fortress of Doom. After playing through that heart wrenching opening sequence, I was hooked. A close second would be Dark Cloud 2.
I'd have to say Fable: The Lost Chapters. It has a very magical and 'tale'-ish aura about it and it manages to be epic and silly at the same time. The mainplot is very interesting, emotional and deep. The good/evil gameplay core adds a whole depth to the story. It is very silly and funny - for example the british accents and characters and all that - but never in an open way, you don't laugh outright at the game and it's not crazy. Oh and the history and secrets of the albion universe that you find, but never actually manage to reveal. The music is amazing and makes the game feel all dark, as if it was a dream. The game is very abstract, deep and atmospheric. It's actually my all time favourite game ever created. I love it dearly. Unfortunately the sequals weren't very true to this game and generally were quite average games.
1. Mass effect 1,2,(and I'm pretty sure 3 when it comes out) 2.Fallout 3 and New Vegas 3. Mount and Blade.
Mount & Blade is definitely one of the most awesome games out there, absolutely love it, it's so unique there is litterally no game out there like it. The only game I would compare it to is Total War, but they're still really different.
I just got done playing 2 (I played 3 last fall) and man did it suck. It seems like a 4 year old developed the player pathing, and it overall is the clunkiest and poorest handling game I have ever played. The cut scenes were epicly uninteresting, non skippable, and forced you to hold down the Left trigger and stare at a bit of scenery for some completely nonsensical reason. I watched a LP of TLC, and it's what convinced me to buy 3 (which I thought was very solid) but they certainly don't seem to be on the level of TLC anymore.
Yeah. The problem I had with Fable 2 was mainly the change of theme and setting. 500 years later, with firearms and stuff was awfully boring. Then there were awful characters, a short plot, no bosses, no history, crap magic system, pretty much no Good-Evil system, main enemy was boring (unlike Jack of Blades who is awesome) and such. That's pretty much Fable 2. In Fable 3 they managed to dumb down the game even more by, for example, havin only 2 types of melee weapons, Swords and Hammers. The only thing that kept me playing through Fable 3 was the humor and hilarious quests. It was worth playing through the game alone but it just wasn't Fable.
I liked Fable: the lost chapters a lot but the problem I had with the game is that you couldn't play the game after you had defeated Jack of Blades as a dragon which is why I have chosen Oblivion over Fable but still Fable was a pretty good game.
Well Oblivion and Fable are quite different games but really after you defeated Jack there wasn't that much to do anyways.
