Well, Japan always had access to this 'modern' technology and then effectively industrialised in 30 years, what I find remarkable is that they tried to retain themselves and even resist alot of the horrors of modernity, they saw the failings in it that would take 'the West' another century or so to recognise. I think they were able to do this through a feudal lense, and ofc the ancient wisdom of the samurai and Zen Buddhism.
