    Hmm that's interesting so say the least. What unit were you in? And where were these pictures taken? If I may inquire

    I was a reconnaissance team leader and now I'm an infantry squad leader in the national guard. Those pictures were from Iraq back in 08

    56sbct (strykey brigade) 28th infantry (it's the unit patch in the first picture), the only stryker brigade in the national guard.

    @pedro3131
    Is it a good idea to join the national guard to pay for college if my family is poor and I probably wont get a scholarship?

    Now might not be a bad idea, seeing as we're winding things down internationally, and pretty much everyone in my job is volunteering to go on deployments before it's all over. There is a good likelihood you would never see a deployment, assuming we stay out of any future conflicts. That said, you have to be prepared to give up a year plus of your life at little notice (they try to give you as much fair warning as possible but we had guys on our deployment who had a weeks notice) to potentially run around the desert getting shot at. You do some fun stuff on deployment, but they're not really a fun experience, and if it's not something you'd be prepared to do I'd say it's definitely not the job for you.

    On college money, the way the gi bill is structured now, it really only pays for everything if you're going to an in state school. It's also pro-rated off how much active duty time you do, so if you go straight guard you're not going to get 100% tuition benefits. Recruiters will lie to you about this, but understand that even after 4 years, a considerable amount of promotions and accolades, and a year plus deployment, I only get 60% benefits and still have to pay about 1500 a semester out of pocket.
